Hands-On with Push 3 Decksaver and UDG Creator Ableton Push 3 Hardcase + My Fav Backpack (So Far)

I’ve been working on-and-off with Push 3 since its release. I currently have a Push 3 Controller version. I’ve gigged with Push 3 and also brought it along on sessions at other people’s studios so I’ve been not so patiently waiting for covers and bags for Push 3.

I’ve had a Decksaver covers for many years for gear like my Push 2, Deluge, and all my Elektron gear for both local and gigs where I fly and consider them essential gear. I’m also a fan of UDG gig cases.

I recently ordered both the Dekcsaver and the UDG Creator Ableton Push 3 Hardcase Black. I thought I’d share my experience with this cover and case in a blog post with some pictures and thoughts on these cases after some hands-on time with them.

Full Disclosure

I’ve been doing freelance sound design for the Ableton Berlin sound design team since 2021 and am proud to have some sounds in the core library for Live 11, Live 12, and inside the Push 3. I don’t personally benefit from any Ableton sales. I’ll also offer some links in this post to this gear. I’m not an affiliate. Just providing links to save you some time. So if you found this and other posts helpful consider buying me a coffee using the form at the bottom of this post or in the sidebar.

Decksaver Cover for Push 3

Needless to say, I was quite happy when Decksaver announced their Push 3 version. I’m here in the US and ended up ordering mine from B & H for $89.99. Here is a link https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1785817-REG/decksaver_ds_pc_push3_ableton_push_3_cover.html.

The cover fits very well and the custom-fit mold allows for space for the new knob placements.

There is a nice margin of space between the jog wheel and encoders to the top of the case so adding the Decksaver won’t put stress on the controls when the Push 3 with the cover is smashed into a backpack.

I was very happy to see that the cover has cutouts on the back so you don’t have to unpatch any cables that are hanging off the back making this not just a protective cover, but a nice dust cover for the studio.

And I was VERY VERY happy to see that the orange Push 3 power button IS covered by the case preventing accidental battery drains for Standalone Push 3 users 🔋 🎉.

Bottom line, the cover ticks all the boxes for me.

Pro-Tip: My Favorite Carry Backpack To Date for Push 3 with Decksaver is an Elektron ECC-6 Backpack 🤔🤣

Wait what? Yes, it’s true. You can just slide the Push 3 with the cover into the this bag https://www.elektron.se/us/backpack-ecc-6. The bag has a padded button, but because the Push 3 is heavy I added some more padding to the bottom. As of the date of this post, I’m using the Controller tethered version of Push 3, so this bag can also fit my MacBook into the suspended inner laptop sleeve, with an ipad in a pocket on the panel closest to your back. Zips are weather resistant.

So if you are looking for a very lightweight unstructured bag that fits the Push 3 with the Dekscaver on it, this is what’s working for me. Great bag Elektron!

Rugged, weather-resistant fabric in black, with padding on front and back for protection and comfort.

Compression straps and a roll top design let you adjust the carry capacity with ease. Pack lightly or load up depending on your trip.

The backpack includes an internal compartment for storing a 15″ laptop, and a separate travel wallet for documents such as passports and boarding passes. Travel-friendly carry-on size with trolley hooks, and side pockets for bottles and other quick-grab items.

UDG Creator Ableton Push 3 Hardcase Black

I’ve been watching as gig bags and cases have been entering the market. A recent search over on the UDG web site (https://www.udggear.com/searchanise/result?q=push%203) brought up 3 cases and compatible bags. I ended up going with the UDG Creator Ableton Push 3 Hardcase Black (https://www.udggear.com/udg-creator-ableton-push-3-hardcase-black).

I couldn’t find any US retailers so I decided to take one for the team and order it right off of their web site for €69.95. As you can see I took a real beating on shipping (if you’d like to help with that you can “By Me a Coffee” at the bottom of the post).

I went with this case because I wanted something lighter and smaller yet something with a rigid top and bottom so that if I put this in another bag, there wouldn’t be undue pressure on the amazing Push3 jog wheel.

You can see from this image I pulled from their web shop that the Push 3 fits nicely in the case.

I was hoping that the Push 3 power brick would fit in that little slot in the case below the Push, but it’s just a little bit too big 😢.

I personally don’t like putting something like the Push 3 into a case like this without a Decksaver cover because I just don’t like the idea of the egg-crate foam putting pressure or side-to-side movement on the Jog Wheel at all. It might be fine, but if I were to go this route I’d probably cut out the egg-create foam in places.

This begs the question. Will this case work if there is a Decksaver on the Push 3?

The answer is YES! Put the cover on first and press the cover down a bit and slots right in. No doubt, the lid is “sprung”, but with some gentle pressure you can zip it in, and as I mentioned above, the cover has margin to the knobs so even with extra pressure I’m going with this assuming knobs underneath will be fine.

If for some reason, you are not comfortable with this, UGG made a really really nice design choice by making the inner eggshell foam removable with Velcro. Way to go UDG!

The Push 3 with the Decksaver moves around ever so slightly in this config, but it seems not enough for the cover to pop off or anything like that. You could of course add a slight amount of padding to snug it up.

With the exterior of the case measuring in at 42.4 x 40.7 x 6.1 cm | 16.7 x 16.0 x 2.4 inches, it won’t fit in my larger backpack or my trusty Elektron ECC-6 😢.

This being the case, I’ll use my ECC-6 if I want to get everything in one pack.

I’ll use the UDG Creator Ableton Push 3 Hardcase with its handle if I just want to carry the Push 3 with Decksaver along with other bags and cases.

Closing Thoughts

For me, the Decksaver cover is essential. I do like the UDG and will keep it as I can see some use cases where it will come in handy.

All these products are just starting to rollout. I’ll report-out other cases and covers I come across them so subscribe if you’d like to get artist updates and other synth tech and technique blog posts of this nature.

Also, if you come across a case you like, feel free to drop a comment at the bottom of this post.

Till next time,

Mark Mosher
