Heads Up – Location Change for the Monthly Beat Cypher Performance Event in Boulder

A post to spread the word. After a brief hiatus, the Beat Cypher returns on June 27th at a new location. Here is Justin’s note on this from the official Facebook Group.

“Hey everyone! Beat Cypher update: Madelife has officially moved to a new location. I will be holding the next cypher here on Thursday June 27th. We are now located at The Studio Boulder 3550 Frontier Ave Suite A. Its a bit of a different vibe but I think you all will dig it! Same time, new place. 7:30pm-10pm. I’ve had a busy month and some fun travels and I’m excited to get the crew back together for a sesh! Let’s rock.”

New Experimental Improv Release “Miracle Eater” by LSD

One of my improv mentors Dino J.A. Deane played an experimental improvized set with as part of the trio LSD at the Muse Performance Space in Lafayette, CO last Friday. The lineup was:

Performing Set at Beat Cypher May 24th, 2018 on Elektron Digitakt + Video from Past Performance on Analog Four

I’ll be performing a set tonight (Thursday, May 24th) at the Beat Cypher event in Boulder. As the format is rapid-fire 10 minute sets and I’ll be improvising using only an Elektron Digitakt and using small a set of custom beat sketches as a starting point. My set is inspired by the Star Trek: The Original Series episode #21 “The Return of the Archons”  – ha!

Here is a recording of the song I performed. I forgot to hit record during that live session – so this is a recording I made during a session in the studio earlier that day. The song was inspired by the ST:TOS episode “Return of the Archons”. It was performed live on an Elektron Digitakt and recorded straight to 2-track without edits.

Madelife, a creative accelerator in Boulder and frequent host venue for the Rocky Mountain Synthesizer Meetup, started hosting a very cool electronic music concert series late in 2017 called Beat Cypher. Each performer gets a 10-minute slot and signs up first come first serve. It’s Rapid-fire fun for performers and listeners!

I challenged myself to do my set with just an Elektron Analog Four. The Analog Four has 4 analog synths, is only 4 note polyphonic in total and has chorus, delay and reverb on the master chain.

The performance is a combination of original presets, tweaked factory presets, live playing using the onboard chromatic keyboard, real-time sound design, use of some pre-defined original sequences with live arrangement and live sequencing. I’m using 4 kits” throughout (which you can switch to with no load-time or hickups). So all synthesis, no samples, no audio playback.

  • 00:34 Live arrangement with grooves, live-sound design, live play on chromatic keyboard
  • 4:00 Back to real-time synthesis using chromatic keyboard

Divergence

Modulate This! has always had a synth tech and technique slant with industry trends sprinkled in. The earlier articles reflected the emergence of laptops for live performance, the divergence of buying a shit ton of VSTs and gear, and the rise of “controllerism”.

Note – When trying to decide what photo create for this post I started thinking back about all the gear I’ve used over the past decade. Then it struck me that the only two instruments that survive in my rig that I had when I started of the blog in 2005 are Ableton Live (which I started using in 2003) and Absynth (which I started using in 2002 and it is still my go to virtual synth). Something old, something new… Push 2.

Along the way I made quite a few “how-to” video tutorials on my companion YouTube channel (which has just over a million views) and also documented a lot of my research on my public Mindmeister mindmap channel (featuring the “Elektron Octatrack Video Tutorial Index” with over 30K views; and the “What’s New in Ableton Live 9” and “U-HE DIVA Synthesizer: OSC & Filter Anatomy” maps each with over 15K Views).

Convergence

In the last few years, the blog has reflected my convergence down to a smaller set of instruments with a focus on mastery. This often resulted in longer deeper reads.

This piece was improvised and performed on the Nord Lead 4 and the Elektron Octatrack. It was recorded in one real-time pass with no edits.

All the synthesized source sounds are from my original Lead 4 presets. I live sampled and looped the Nord Lead 4 into the Octatrack and performed most sonic movement in realtime on the Octatrack.

Story

This is the soundtrack of an expedition to an ancient ice cave. As you descend deep into the cavern hear surreal sound of the wind blended with your own scanning equipment reverberating through massive cave system. At around the 7:00 minute mark, your systems start picking up some movement in the cave. You’ve got a bad fielding about this – so you initiate emergency ascent at 8:20.

This is not a sample. This is all synthesis. The entire piece is made from a single original patch I made on the digital modular synthesizer U-HE Bazille.

The piece was recorded in a single pass with no edits. I performed this on a Novation Remote SL 25 MK2 keyboard by playing notes and manipulating the mod wheel, key pressures and the knobs of the synth in real-time during recording.

Sonic Encounters Podcast 006 – When the Whales Take Back the Ocean

As humans and their technology have evolved, they have encroached more and more on the domain of the whale and other sea life. Of course the whales have been evolving as well – and – unbeknownst to us, they have been patiently plotting and waiting for the right time put things back in balance.  Listen as a group of humpback whales execute phase 1 of their plan to take back the ocean.

From Seismic Surveys Negatively Affect Humpback Whale Singing Activity off Northern Angola“…

“Discussion…The presence of oil and gas exploration activities in this region and globally, and the potential acoustic impact that anthropogenic noise sources may have on sensitive species are increasing areas of study and concern for industry, governments, biologists and conservationists [23], [25]. The intense pulses produced by seismic surveys clearly have the potential to cause direct or behaviourally mediated physiological harm at close distances [34], but more subtly at longer distances there exists the potential of disturbing animals and altering important behaviours, as well as masking acoustic signals and negatively affecting communication. … It appears that whales are ceasing to sing, or moving to other areas to sing when seismic surveys are being conducted in relatively close proximity. We emphasize that this is documentation of disturbance of a breeding display for a baleen whale on a breeding ground, and thus has implied potential for affecting mating behaviour and success.”

The ONLY source audio for this piece is from public domain recordings of humpback whale song and vocalizations. The samples were loaded into multiple tracks on an Elektron Octatrack Dynamic Performance Sampler.

Performance

The entire piece was improvised and recorded in one real-time pass using only the Octatrack’s unique an expressive capabilities, built-in-effects and ability to morph. The piece was recorded with a Zoom H2N with no edits (after much rehearsal). The fun and challenge of this piece was to see how far I could take a handful of similar recordings to tell a story and to go well beyond the sonic character of the source material. So I start off quite organic, and end quite “horror show”.

Live Performance Video – Part 1 Boulder Synthesizer Meetup August 11, 2015

This video is part 1 of a live cinematic electronica set I performed at the Boulder Synthesizer Meetup on August 11th 2015 at the Walnut room in Denver. In this video I’m performing both the music and the visuals.

In part 1 I perform an extended version of “Gonna Rise Up” from the album Fear Cannot Save Us” markmosher.bandcamp.com/album/fear-cannot-save-us. For this piece, I was doing live arrangement on the Octatrack plus playing lead synth on the Waldorf Blofeld. The lead patch is an original patch from INIT using OSC2 & 3 for sync with mod wheel. The original lead patch on the album version was done with Zebra 2. To retain some of its character, I used Extreme Sample Convert to multi-sample the Zebra patch then import into the Blofeld for the source for Oscillator 1.

This set was performed only on Octatrack dynamic performance sampler with original field recordings and sonic elements from albums plus a Waldorf Blofled keyboard with original presets.

Live audio was recorded on a Zoom H2n fed by my sub-mix to house via Mackie 402VLZ3. Main footage is from a GoPro with secondary foot from my friend Chris Frain.

Visuals Notes:
The ONLY video source is from live camera input being run through layers of custom Resolume presets controlled by an Arturia Beatstep live.

Introducing (no)poem – A New Collaboration with Artist Darwin Grosse

My good friend Darwin Grosse and I formed a new duo called (no)poem to support our performances and recorded work. Check out our new web site at http://www.nopoem.net.

Darwin Grosse is director of education and customer services for Cycling ’74 (Max). He is the  creator and host of the art+music+technologypodcast. Darwin also launched a brand new blog called All Things Modular.

The unique nature of our interaction comes from the instruments that we use. Darwin focuses his attention on a portable modular synthesizer, while my system is centered around an Elektron Octatrack and a Waldorf Blofeld desktop. This combo is aided by an automated generative visual system.

Our work is completely improvised, but are supported by the use of postcard-sized graphical scores. This gives us the ability to create structured improvisations while remaining open to react to our surroundings and to each others’ work. We do not use laptop computers or keyboards during our performance, forcing us to use alternative controlling devices to produce the work.

A remote technician sitting in a cubical farm 8,000 miles away initiates your transfer while multi-tasking to monitor 49 other transfers in-flight. He took on an extra shift today to make more money to save for his own transfer – although it will take him years to save enough for his own procedure. He squints – straining through fatigue to read the virtual dials on his aging computer screen. As your transfer begins, he nods off – dreaming of his own immortality.

Artists Notes
This is a modern take on Edgar Allen Poe’s “Premature Burial”. In this fictional – and some say inevitable scenario – there are new fears to be considered. This piece focuses on the fear of being cataleptic and aware that you are on a one way trip to an immortal state with irreversible transcription errors in your consciousness. The soundscape represents the audio feed from the patient’s transfer monitor.

Production Notes

I recorded the piece in one real-time pass with no edits to a Zoom H2 running on battery. The song is primarily  based on the field recording of a thunderstorm. Most of the low bass sounds is a manipulated thunder clap. I recorded this in a park in Louisville, CO on my Octatrack running on battery.  I performed the piece by playing the OT in chromatic mode and by manipulating parameters in real-time – so no sequencing.

Sonic Encounters Podcast 001 – And What Do The Trees Hear When the Wind Blows?

This song is an ambient sonic journey starting with natural sounds which morph into the hidden inner world of trees and back again. The piece starts off with a 120 degree stereo field recording of wind blowing through aspen trees and surrounding trees in Louisville, Colorado just outside of Boulder.

Production Notes

ALL sounds in the other 8 tracks of the recording use the original 30 seconds of audio from the trees as source audio. To create the inner-world sonic soundscape I used a variety of techniques from processing the sound with effects through re-synthesizing the harmonic content of the trees to make new playable virtual instruments that allowed me to compose subtle pitched drones.

Listen to “Falling” Sound Design Experiment with Live 9 + Max for Live Convolution Reverb Pro Using IR Made with Pitch-to-MIDI Absynth Patch

I was experimenting with Live 9’s new pitch-to-MIDI and Max for Live Convolution Reverb Pro a few days back and come up with this idea.

 

 

Here is the process I followed.

  1. I started with a vocal sample by the wonderful artist Snowflake (CC-BY-NC faccmixter.org/files/snowflake/37827). BTW I remixed one of her tracks last year – click here to give it a listen.
  2. Use “Convert Melody to New MIDI Track” to convert her Melody to MIDI. This creates a new MIDI track with an Ableton instrument.
  3. Swap the Ableton instrument on the MIDI track with Absynth 5.  You could of course stick with Ableton instruments here. I used a dissonant bell preset with major reverb decay.
  4. Create an audio clip from the Absynth patch. You could resample it or  freeze the track,  insert a new audio track and drag the frozen clip to the new audio track to create an audioclip.
  5. Insert the Max for Live Convolution Reverb Pro on the original vocal track.
  6. Apply the Absynth sample as the Impulse Response file for the Convolution Reverb by dragging the audio clip from step #4 and dropping it I on the waveform display of the Max for Live device.
  7. Play the original sample through the Convolution Reverb

What’s great about this process is since the Impulse Response was derived from pitch-to-MIDI of the original sample, the resultant reverb follows the phrasing of the original vocal track – but of course is also slewed and torqued in an organic way by using the Absynth patch with more sustain and bigger reverb and space. I also love how this creates new harmonics.

I also want to point out that while each of these discrete processes are available in separate tools already, having this all integrated in Live 9 with Max for Live makes for a rapid and creative sound design workflow. It’s taken me way longer to explain it her than id did to think this up and execute the idea (which only took about 5 minutes).

It’s also worth mentioning you don’t need to be a programmer to use Max for Live as an artist. Just drag in the devices that come with Max for Live essentials and use them like any native live device.
