Ableton Live Tip: Sequencing on the Fly and Insert Captured Scene

For some time, I’ve been using a fantastic keyboard shortcut in Ableton Live called Insert Captured Scene. It has the potential to save you a lot of time and allow you to further enhance your zen-like ability to create and sequence on the fly.

Let me talk a little about an approach I often use to create a new phrase (say for a verse) then create variations of the phrase without stopping playback.

  • I create a Live set with basic instruments – you know, drums, bass, pad etc…
  • I then lay a bass or drum track down with the metronome running
  • At this point, I switch off the metronome and use the new track as a rythmic reference
  • I’m now free to select different tracks and start laying down other parts within the scene

The illustration below shows the end result of this process with a scene made up of 5 clips in 5 tracks.

Now I want to create a variation of the scene with tracks 1,2, and 4. However, I want to do this instantly without stopping the sequencer or having to drag clips to a new scene.  By pressing Ctrl-Shift-I on a PC, or Command-Shift-I on a Mac, the selected clips in the current scene are instantly copied to a new scene and the scene begins to play.

Give it a try. I think it might change the way you work within Live.

Ableton Live Update 6.0.3 is Now Available

Live603

Ableton has released an update to Live – version 6.0.3. What’s new in Ableton Live 6.0.3? It contains many bug fixes as well as some minor improvements. I’ll high lite a few improvements and fixes below, but visit Ableton’s form for a full list of changes here. The update is available here.

Some improvements include:

  • Context menu in zone editor has two new entries:  Select all parts with same range, Reload loops from file

  • Easier macro-mapping by adding the "Map to Macro .." menu

to each context menu of a device parameter within a group.
  • Performance improvement for the loading of Live clips
  • Several multi-sample import improvements

Bug Fixes:

  • A problem with the first MIDI note of a MIDI recording (great fix for those who do a lot of MIDI recording!)

  • The check to prevent the creation of frozen files > 2 GB would not work properly.

  • When soloing multiple tracks using learned midi or key, the un-soloing

could keep a single track muted.

Ableton Live 6 Tip: How to quickly select a device in a chain or rack

Ableton_trackview3_1

Prior to Ableton Live 6, to select a device in a chain you had to use your mouse to scroll through the list of devices. This made finding and selecting devices rather tedious when a large number of devices were involved. This problem was compounded with the introduction of Racks.

There is a new feature in Live 6 that allows you to pop-up a hierarchical list of all devices in the chain and/or rack then select the device you are interested in.

To use this list:

  • Pop-up the list. In Windows, right-click in the Track View Selector. For Mac Users, hold down your Ctrl key then click on Track View Selector.
  • Select a device in the list. Click on a name in this list. This will bring this device into focus.

This feature is especially handy when dealing with Racks or Sampler patches containing a large number of devices. The image above (click to see larger view) illustrates this pop-up with a Rack Preset called "Depth of Field". As you can see, this Rack contains multiple chains with multiple instruments and effects.

Ableton Live 6 – Uses for Instrument Racks

The concept of creating a patch with splits and layers is missing, or
is difficult to configure on a lot of software-based virtual studios.
With Ableton Live 6 this is now easy to achieve by using Instrument
Racks.

What can you do with this feature? Well you can create a patches that are made up of a combination of instrument sounds that are layered and split across the keyboard. This allows you to play multiple sounds without having to switch patches in mid-performance and is a must for live gigging.

For example, you could assign a bass instrument to the bottom third of the keyboard, a piano/string layer to the middle keyboard, and a synth lead to the top third. You might want to set the middle piano/string layer so that that it uses velocity cross fade so when play lightly only the strings sound,  if you play with medium velocity both the piano and the strings sound, and if you play hard only the piano sounds. Another use for layers is to build lush, fat, and or rhythmically complex sounds by layering a lot of instruments over the same keyboard zone.

Ableton_burton_splitLets checkout a presets created by Ableton so you can hear this for yourself.

Go to the Device Browser-> Instruments -> Instrument Rack -> Performance. Then drag Burton Split  into a track or onto the clip/device drop area. This Instrument Rack has bells on the top-half of the keyboard, and a metallic/breathy choir sound on the bottom half of the keyboard.

There are a lot of other presets to listen to and experiment with in the device browser – so have it it!

Ableton Live 6 – Overview of rack types, rack presets, and how to insert a preset

Rack_presetsOne of my favorite new features of Ableton Live 6 is the new "rack" feature. According to the manual, there are three different types of racks:

  • MIDI Effect Racks contain only MIDI effects, and can only be placed in MIDI tracks
  • Audio Effect Racks contain only audio effects, and can be placed in audio tracks. They can also be placed in MIDI tracks, as long as they are downstream from instrument.
  • Instrument Racks contain instruments, but can additionally contain both MIDI audio effects. In this case, all MIDI effects have to be at the beginning of the Instrument Rack’s device chain, followed by an instrument, and then any audio effects.

Ableton has provided some interesting rack presets in Live 6. You can access them via the Device Browser.

To insert a preset, just drag it from the Device Browser into a track or onto the clip/device drop area.
