Replay of My Set + Full Concert for 8th B-Day Concert for Rocky Mountain Synthesizer Meet

The 8th B-Day party concert was really fun and loaded with great performances. Special thanks to Christoph for being our virtual stage manager.

My Performance

This is recording of my 10 minute set from the Rocky Mountain Synthesizer Meet 8th birthday party concert. Music and visuals are performed in real-time.

I start by playing a song called “Light Runner” performed on an Elektron Digitone playing notes via MIDI from a Novation Launchpad Pro MK3. I then improvise and mangle a sample from the 50’s using an Elektron Octatrack. This is followed by followed by an improv jam with core patterns on Digitone with lead synth and arpeggios from an Elektron Analog Four MKII being played via MIDI from a Novation Luaunchkey Mini MK3.

Entire Performance

Here is the full concert performance (including the video above) with all 7 artists.

Photos from Oct 30th Miss American Vampire Concert

miss-american-vampire-photos-flickr

I just uploaded a bunch of photos from the Oct 30th Miss American Vampire set as a Flickr album. Thanks to James Terry who took a lot of the higher-end shots. You may not recognize in some of the shots as I was dressed as Robert Smith from the cure for Halloween. I’m the guy in the black wig :^)

In addition to doing my own visuals, I also did visuals for the artists. Included in this album is some footage without audio that I rendered as I was doing visuals for these artists. The video is what the audience saw projected on the screens.

Teaser Video for Oct 30th Miss America Vampire Halloween Concert at Walnut Room Denver

I produced this teaser video for the upcoming Miss American Vampire — songs on theremin by victoria lundy / The Night Before Halloween concert.

The music in the video is from Victoria’s new release. The visuals were performed in real-time and an example of what you’ll see during her set. We’re also doing projection mapping for this show.

Doors are at 8, and show is at 9. I’m kicking off the night and will perform a set made up of dark techno and dark ambient. I’ll be playing a few composed pieces from albums but mostly news music. I’ve also upped my game with my own visuals. Happy Halloween!

The ninety and nine are with dreams, content but the hope of the world made new, is the hundredth man who is grimly bent on making those dreams come true.
—Edgar Allan Poe

The Walnut Room in Denver has been a loyal supporter of experimental and ambient artists, is a beautiful venue with superior sound, and boasts the best audio engineers in town. There, on October 30, Halloween eve, the unveiling of new music by thereminist Victoria Lundy will be the occasion for the gathering of a diverse group of electronic music artists, all of them intent on creating magic. Mark Mosher will contribute his synth wizardry, and to complement the music and sound, Mark will also project enchanting visuals. Church Fire will cast their scorching synth pop into the bubbling cauldron. Keldari Station will bind them all with the music of the spheres. A  cosmic event not to be missed.*

Screen shot of part 2 video for live performance at the Boulder Synthesizer Meetup on August 15th
Screen shot of part 2 video for live performance at the Boulder Synthesizer Meetup on August 15th

This video is part 2 of a live cinematic electronica set I performed at the Boulder Synthesizer Meetup on August 11th 2015 at the Walnut room in Denver. In this video I’m performing both the music and the visuals.

http://vimeo.com/139852443

In part 2, I move on from the composed piece “Gonna Rise Up” from the album Fear Cannot Save Us” (which you can download here), and switch to improvisation. For Part 2, I’m improvising only on Octatrack dynamic performance sampler with some synth work on the Waldorf Blofled keyboard with original presets.

Live Performance Video – Part 1 Boulder Synthesizer Meetup August 11, 2015

11873654_10205820392721397_6945167335189977591_n (1)

This video is part 1 of a live cinematic electronica set I performed at the Boulder Synthesizer Meetup on August 11th 2015 at the Walnut room in Denver. In this video I’m performing both the music and the visuals.

https://vimeo.com/136179823

In part 1 I perform an extended version of “Gonna Rise Up” from the album Fear Cannot Save Us” markmosher.bandcamp.com/album/fear-cannot-save-us. For this piece, I was doing live arrangement on the Octatrack plus playing lead synth on the Waldorf Blofeld. The lead patch is an original patch from INIT using OSC2 & 3 for sync with mod wheel. The original lead patch on the album version was done with Zebra 2. To retain some of its character, I used Extreme Sample Convert to multi-sample the Zebra patch then import into the Blofeld for the source for Oscillator 1.

Rig Notes:
This set was performed only on Octatrack dynamic performance sampler with original field recordings and sonic elements from albums plus a Waldorf Blofled keyboard with original presets.

Recording Notes:
Live audio was recorded on a Zoom H2n fed by my sub-mix to house via Mackie 402VLZ3. Main footage is from a GoPro with secondary foot from my friend Chris Frain.

Visuals Notes:
The ONLY video source is from live camera input being run through layers of custom Resolume presets controlled by an Arturia Beatstep live.

Robert Edgar on Simultaneous Opposites and 21st Century Cinematicians

I’m counting down to my Thursday night (3/17/2011) show in Sunnyvale. Robert Edgar and I will each perform a set at the Art Institute of California/Sunnyvale.

I met Robert earlier this year at the 2010 Electro-Music Festival where I learned of his fascinating “Simultaneous Opposites Engine” work. Rather than try and explain it, I thought I’d share some excerpts from Robert’s blog as well as embed a sample video.

Simultaneous Opposites Engine

I create and employ software engines to examine mediated artifacts forged at my zone of proximal development. My Simultaneous Opposites engine (2008-present) is a performance/navigation system for real-time traversal of existing video files, sorting through the audio and video a single frame at a time, in a arrhythmic spiraling motion. The center frame between the two ends of the spiral becomes a temporal focal plane, with the length of the jump a temporal depth of field. The navigational path is the result of a preprogrammed algorithm interrupted during traversal by triggering and modulation by computer keyboard, mouse, and MIDI guitar…

Videos
Robert has over 50 examples output of the developing Simultaneous Opposites engine on his Vimeo Channel http://www.vimeo.com/robertedgar/videos– “Each sequential video file exemplifies a stage in the ongoing experiment I've undertaken.” Here is an video #52 "Tone Rose":

Simultaneous Opposites #52: Tone Rose from Robert Edgar on Vimeo

Added a 12-step process to the Simultaneous Opposites engine. It lets me divide the area between two non-adjacent video frames into 12 sections. I can then scramble them, playing them forward, in reverse, as a still, or as a simultaneous opposite traversal. I've added a simple octave 12-tone row, which is useful in sensing the structure. MIDI guitar played over some of these. Primarily a laid-back feel to these, as if Satie was a serialist cinematician…

To read a full introduction "to the ideas behind the Simultaneous Opposites engine: what they are, and where they came from" – I recommend you read the full blog post “Simultaneous Opposites and 21st Century Cinematicians”. You should also visit www.robertedgar.com. And if you are in the Bay Area, you can stop by and see his work live on the 17th. Show is 5-7PM. Show details here.
