New Sonic Encounters Soundscape “Replicant’s Dream” + Video of Improv Session w/ Analog Four and Interactive Visuals w/ Resolume

I just released a Bandcamp subscriber preview of a new soundscape called “Replican’ts Dream” obviously inspired by Bladerunner. Music and visuals improvised and recorded in one real-time pass. Music is performed on Elektron Analog Four MKI using 4 tracks with no sequencing. Visual synthesis in Resolume Arena.

Video of Live Recording Sessions

Here is a video of the recording session.

Teaser for New Live Visuals

This video will also give you a sense of new visuals I’m working on for my live set for online streaming (and eventually for in-person performances). I make use of visual synthesis on various sources including live camera input and control the set in real-time with a LaunchPad PRO MK3 custom mode.

Audio Version of Song

A high-rez audio version of this soundscape is also now available to my bandcamp subscribes as part of the preview of the forthcoming album Sonic Encounters Volume 03 https://markmosher.bandcamp.com/album/sonic-encounters-volume-03. Brighten Your Tuesday with Some Classic Yellow Magic Orchestra Live Concert Videos

My friend and mastering engineer Steve Turnidge just posted this on his FB page. It’s a video of the “Yellow Magic Orchestra – TECHNOPOLIS [Live] (Jun. 2, 1980) HD”. This is so great on so many levels with a super tight full band performance with some fun vocoding, an old-school modular, and the classic “unlit cig while playing on TV” punk move.

I think I listened to this like 5 times before moving on to a video of “TONG POO – YMO 1979 LIVE at THE GREEK THEATRE” which is the encore from this show!

Well there goes your morning just watching all the “Up Next” videos. You are welcome.

New Sonic Encounters Soundscape “Ghosts of Time and Space” Featuring Samples from Empty Vessel’s Ghosts Audio Edition + Video of Improv Session

Video

Here is the video from a session where I improvised a new soundscape called “. This was improvised on Ableton Live 10 with Push 2.

Sources Samples

While I mostly do my own sound design I’ve been enjoying using libraries from others to introduce pleasant surprises (“chance operations”) into some of my improvisational pieces. All the source samples for this song are from the Ghosts sound pack which I bought from my friend and independent New Zealand based sound designer Greg Cole (aka Empty Vessel https://store.emptyvessel.co.nz ).

This was originally released as a samples and presets for the TAL sampler, but I brought these into Ableton (notes on this below).

Greg takes such great care in producing and mastering his source samples I’m happy to report he also just provided these samples as a stand-alone WAV edition here https://store.emptyvessel.co.nz/p/cl3h5w.

Audio Version of Song

Soundcloud

The song is available on Soundcloud here https://soundcloud.com/markmosher/ghosts-time-space.

Bandcamp

A high-rez audio version of this soundscape is also now available to my bandcamp subscribes as part of the preview of the forthcoming album Sonic Encounters Volume 03 https://markmosher.bandcamp.com/album/sonic-encounters-volume-03. Producer’s Notes:

Track 1 – Drum rack filled with almost 64 samples + Echo
Track 2 – The sample “Piano String 2” loaded into Audio Damage Quanta granular synth + Echo
Track 3 – The sample “Sinister Piano Strike EB3” loaded into Ableton Wavetable which analyzes it and converts into a wavetable + Echo
Track 4 – The sample “Wonky Movement C2” loaded into a Simpler + Echo + Reverb
Track 5 – The sample “Sandmand D4” loaded into Simpler + Echo

Video Original Ableton Wavetable Preset “Numbers” on Push 2

A quick post to share a video of a new original preset that’s in progress on the most amazing @Ableton #Wavetable#synth. This one is inspired by Kraftwerk and it called “Numbers” 😀. #SaturdayNightSoundDesign.

This was made entirely with Push 2 without using a mouse. As I’m using Push I incorporate the touch strip, velocity and pressure into this sound.

In a related note I’m slowly working my way towards a whole pack of Wavetable presets so subscribe to be notified of my progress along with other Modulate This! posts.

Video: Elektron Digitone meets Novation Launchpad Pro MK3 Hardware Sequencer, Note and Chord Modes

Here is a 1 minute video of a new song I’m working on with the Digitone.

In this piece, I’m used the Launchpad Pro MK3 hardware sequencer to create a sequences with probability and mutation. I then recorded the MIDI output of the Launchpad Pro MK3 into Digitone via hardware MIDI connection from Launchpad.

I then perform live with Digitone and use the Launchpad Pro MK3 to play notes with Note and Chord mode. Aftertouch is routed to filter and resonance.

Isotonik Studios Asteroids Max for Live Generative Sequencer Free Till April 8th

UNTIL 8th APRIL ASTEROIDS IS FREE TO DOWNLOAD. It’S yours forever so don’t delay in adding it to your account.

Asteroids is a MaxforLive Generative Sequencer that can be used on it’s own or integrated with Ableton Live supported controllers.

Designed and created by Ableton Certified Trainer Mark Towers the device takes it’s inspiration from the hours spent spinning the Circular Dial and hitting the boost button to avoid the oncoming space rocks, then layering them into oblivion!

https://isotonikstudios.com/

Here is the product page https://isotonikstudios.com/product/asteroids/.

Asteroids works in standalone mode or can be controlled directly by the Ableton PUSH & Push TWO or Novation LaunchPad & LaunchPad PRO!

Here is the intro video.

The Full Lineup

Here are links to the full lineup of Isotonik Studios Arcade Series sequencers.

In Use

In a related note, I host the Rocky Mountain Synthesizers Meetup which held it’s 7th anniversary part at Tilt Arcade in Louisville, CO. This event included arcade inspired performances. I reached out to Isotonik Studios and they were kind enough to give me a copy of Arcade Series Ultimate which I used at the event. Here is a 5 minute video of my set.

I start using Tetriq around the 3m30s mark where I use the Push 2 to play. I have to get a row before notes will fire which is harder than it looks 😅. I also use an Max for Live device to map an XBOX 360 Controller to Live for audience participation. Some explicit samples from Sci Fi movies at the end of this video – simply for educational purposes 😉.

These sequencers are super fun and inspiring so I definitely recommend you give Asteroids a try.

New Soundscapes Album – Sonic Encounters Volume 02

I’m happy to announce the release of the album Sonic Encounters Volume 02 on Bandcamp. The album contains 8 improvisational soundscapes with over 40 minutes of original music from season 2 of my Sonic Encounters podcast. The album is available now for $5.

Click here to listen / buy on Bandcamp

The songs are a combination of electronic tonalities derived from pure synthesis from original sound design work, and musique concrète using original sounds and field recordings.

The bandcamp edition allows you to choose from CD Quality FLAC, high-def MP3-320 as well as other formats allowing you to hear even more sonic detail within these works.

Podcast Review & Concept + Season 03

“Goosebumps and Deep Breaths… these rich soundscape “stories” sincerely do thrill my senses.

The concept for Sonic Encounters (so far, and in my interpretation) is this. You read a short text (sometimes the title is enough) on the premise of the “story” before listening. Then you listen to a purely sonic piece of field recording morphed with music, electronic manipulation, and performance, and you’re immediately transported via your own imagination’s 3D projection of his premise.

Mark’s become a consummate sound artist. He creates powerful imagery and elicits surprisingly keen emotional response from the listener without being heavy-handed. His economy and value in precision is proof of his skill. ” – BlindFlyTheater.com

In related news, Season 03 of Sonic Encounters Podcast is coming soon. To tune in to past and future episodes visit SonicEncounters.com.

More on the Carbon Dioxide Ensemble

The Carbon Dioxide Ensemble is a collaboration with Thomas Lundy, Victoria Lundy, and Mark Mosher. We focus  on live improvisational performance of Musique concrète. In this unique act Mark uses the Elektron Octatrack dynamic performance sampler to live sample Thomas Lundy as he manipulates a Copper Heart and other objects with dry ice. Victoria Lundy accompanies on Theremin. The only audio source for Octatrack other than drum samples is the input from the contact mic on the Copper Heart. We then support the show with interactive visuals with live camera input.

Check out this recent performance behind-the-scenes performance video in collaboration with filmmaker Taylor Dunne.
