This instrument is not normally known for drone and ambient work, but I find it’s well suited for this type of free improv. Just to give you an example of what can be done with an Octatrack, check out the is a short ambient video below using mostly Octatrack with Nave iPad synth and Tenori-on as sources. Here are podcast episodes where I used the Octatrack.

Music Monday: The Sound of Thunder by onewayness + dRachEmUsiK

The Sound of Thunder cover art

Onewayness (aka Adam Holquist ) and dRachEmUsiK (aka Charles Shriner) have collaborated on a wonderful new ambient drone album called The Sound of Thunder. I highly recommend buying it to get the high-rez download version at bandcamp for $6 (or more), or ordering the CD version here.

http://bandcamp.com/EmbeddedPlayer/v=2/album=3607282643/size=grande3/bgcol=FFFFFF/linkcol=4285BB/

The Sound of Thunder was inspired by the final movement of T.S. Eliot’s ‘The Waste Land’, ‘What the Thunder Said’; and also by the Brihadaranyaka Upanishad, from which it draws heavily. Each movement is based on one of the four concepts from the Upanishad, as used by Eliot: Datta (Charity), Dayadhvam (Mercy), Damyata (Restraint), and Shantih (Peace). With the exception of Peace, which we have allowed to stand alone, the movements are intended to represent the conflict and resolution between these virtues and the ‘undesirable’ qualities that they are meant to keep in check.
