Tip: Use WinDirStat to Quickly Find Those Huge Mystery Files Eating Up your Hard Disk / SSD

windirstat

Spreading the word about WinDirStat.

WinDirStat is a disk usage statistics viewer and cleanup tool for various versions of Microsoft Windows.

I used it years back and was happy to find that it runs just fine on Windows 10. It helped me visualize my SSD and free up about a quarter of the drive in about 15 minutes! Highly recommended. It’s donation-ware.

It has super intuitive interface. Look for big blogs. Click the block and it focuses the embedded file explorer to that file. Right-click to block to explore using Windows explorer. Right-click from it’s file explorer to delete or explore.

I found some app crash dumps and cache in seconds that were huge. I was just at a friends studio and he was almost out of SSD space. He was able to free up 32GB of space in about 5 minutes!

Here is a video of the app in action.

Note: if you are looking for an alternative for Linux, you are looking for KDirStat (apt-get install kdirstat or apt-get install k4dirstat on Debian-derivatives) or QDirStat and for MacOS X it would be Disk Inventory X or GrandPerspective.
