About Freq Boutique & Fort Greene

Promotional image for Freq Boutique modular synth performance showcase, featuring colorful cables and equipment, with text displaying event details.

For those who haven’t heard of Freq Boutique, it’s an amazing monthly community event that’s been going strong for years. This will be the 97th event 😲.

Freq Boutique is a monthly showcase hosted by WMD Synthesis’s Alex Anderson that’s catered around modular and hardware synthesizers and synthesists. You can think of it kind of like an open mic night for synth heads. It’s also a hybrid event — both in-person and streamed live to the WMD YouTube channel.

The event takes place at Fort Greene Bar in Globeville, north of downtown Denver. When you enter Fort Greene, you immediately feel a great, magical vibe. The staff and drinks are amazing.

Here are two pics of past performances I’ve done there to give you a sense of the vibe:

Solo set on Sep 4th, 2024.

(no)poem Sep 9th 2023

A live music performance in an intimate, colorful venue with plants and artwork. Two musicians are at the front, one mixing on a laptop and the other adjusting equipment, while an engaged audience observes.
A crowded indoor venue with colorful lighting, people watching a live music performance, and various decorations hanging from the ceiling.

Streaming Live

If for some reason you can’t make it or don’t live in the area, the event will also stream live on the WMDevices YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/@WMDevices/streams

You can also replays of past shows out there. Note the numbering is a little off and last month’s is labeled 97.

My Set: New Songs on Ableton Push and Move Using Only Drift and Wavetable

I’ll be performing some new songs in my set. They are all cinematic techno vibes.

My rig will be a Ableton Push3 standalone and Ableton Move using a 1010 Bluebox as a mixer / recorder / show-clock with in-ears (Xvive U45 transmitter and BASN BMasterX IEM).

An overhead view of a music production setup featuring an Ableton Push 3, a blue mixer called Bluebox, and various connected cables, highlighting a digital music creation environment.

This set explores using on Drift and Wavetable, two Ableton synths I contributed sounds for as a freelance sound designer for Ableton Berlin sound team. It’s a bit of a love letter showcasing their versatility and expressiveness.

I’m embracing hardware limitations:

  • Ableton Move: Only 4 tracks, no scene launch. I’ve developed a performance workflow that turns these limitations into creative opportunities, leveraging poly-pressure pads for leads, trig locking, 16 Pitches mode, and Granular FX.
  • Ableton Push 3 Standalone: 5–6 tracks for live performance with MPE pads and XYZ gestures (Live 12.3).

Video from My Last Performances at Freq Boutique

I performed solo at Freq Boutique on September 4th, 2024, introducing songs that later appeared in my Beautiful Tomorrows multimedia show.

Check out this groovy 360 video highlight from that set.

I also performed in the duo (no)poem with The Aefonic on September 9th, 2023. This was the debut of the reformed (no)poem, which I started with the late great Darwin Grosse. It was our first performance and a warm-up for our Knobcon 2023 set in Chicagoland.
