Nine Inch Nails Releases 2 New Free Albums in the Ghosts Series – GHOSTS V: TOGETHER and GHOSTS VI: LOCUSTS

Heads up! Nine Inch Nails just released 2 new albums which they are making available for free! These releases are a continuation of the GHOSTS series and are called GHOSTS V: TOGETHER and GHOSTS VI: LOCUSTS. Links to download and stream the album at the bottom of the post.

Friends-

Weird times indeed…

As the news seems to turn ever more grim by the hour, we’ve found ourselves vacillating wildly between feeling like there may be hope at times to utter despair – often changing minute to minute. Although each of us define ourselves as antisocial-types who prefer being on our own, this situation has really made us appreciate the power and need for CONNECTION.

Music – whether listening to it, thinking about it or creating it – has always been the thing that helped us get through anything – good or bad. With that in mind, we decided to burn the midnight oil and complete these new Ghosts records as a means of staying somewhat sane.

Ghosts V: Together is for when things seem like it might all be okay, and Ghosts VI: Locusts… well, you’ll figure it out.

It made us feel better to make these and it feels good to share them. Music has always had a way of making us feel a little less alone in the world… and hopefully it does for you, too. Remember, everyone is in this thing together and this too shall pass.

We look forward to seeing you again soon.
Be smart and safe and take care of each other.

With love,
Trent & Atticus

Sonic Encounters Podcast Coming to an End But Lives On as an Album Series + New Song

I first launched the Sonic Encounters podcast in almost 5 years ago in June of 2015. In June of 2017 I also started releasing podcast seasons as albums on Bandcamp.

Today I’m writing to let you now that I’ve decided to retire the podcast and continue forward with Sonic Encounters exclusively as an album series on Bandcamp.

So a big thanks all of you out there who listened to and subscribed to the past episodes. Below is more info on how to continue to stream or download past episodes plus get new songs as I release them.

Streaming and Downloading Past Episodes

You can still stream all past episodes that were released as albums for free via Bandcamp. The advantage of having these as Bandcamp releases is that you can also buy and then download high resolution audio versions of the songs and in some cases get bonus tracks.

Volume 03 is In The Works + New Song

Active subscribers to my bandcamp subscription (learn more here) get access to all my new music plus my entire back catalog of 12 releases which includes Volume 01 and Volume 02 of Sonic Encounters. Subscribers also get early access to Volume 03 which is in the works.

Subscribers get access to tracks of Volume 03 as I’m creating the album. As of this post, the album has 2 tracks from the podcast before I shut it down, plus a brand new track called…

“Ancient Savanna (A Post Modern Ambient Bossa Nova Ice Cream Sandwich)”.

It’s a soundscape with a narrative arc and is the third song on the forthcoming Sonic Encounters Volume 03 album. It’s filled with some throwback rhythms and gorgeous analog tones.

Thanks for listening and subscribers thanks for your support!

New Soundscapes Album – Sonic Encounters Volume 02

I’m happy to announce the release of the album Sonic Encounters Volume 02 on Bandcamp. The album contains 8 improvisational soundscapes with over 40 minutes of original music from season 2 of my Sonic Encounters podcast. The album is available now for $5.

Click here to listen / buy on Bandcamp

The songs are a combination of electronic tonalities derived from pure synthesis from original sound design work, and musique concrète using original sounds and field recordings.

The bandcamp edition allows you to choose from CD Quality FLAC, high-def MP3-320 as well as other formats allowing you to hear even more sonic detail within these works.

Podcast Review & Concept + Season 03

“Goosebumps and Deep Breaths… these rich soundscape “stories” sincerely do thrill my senses.

The concept for Sonic Encounters (so far, and in my interpretation) is this. You read a short text (sometimes the title is enough) on the premise of the “story” before listening. Then you listen to a purely sonic piece of field recording morphed with music, electronic manipulation, and performance, and you’re immediately transported via your own imagination’s 3D projection of his premise.

Mark’s become a consummate sound artist. He creates powerful imagery and elicits surprisingly keen emotional response from the listener without being heavy-handed. His economy and value in precision is proof of his skill. ” – BlindFlyTheater.com

In related news, Season 03 of Sonic Encounters Podcast is coming soon. To tune in to past and future episodes visit SonicEncounters.com.

Multimodal – A New Synth Album by Chris Frain #Apptronica #Electro #Retro #Space Disco

My good friend and frequent Chris Frain has a new release called Multimodal now available on Bandcamp https://chrisfrainmusic.bandcamp.com/album/multimodal. BTW – Chris was a frequent presenter and performer at the Rocky Mountain Synthesizer Meetup before he moved down to Albuquerque.

So far for, my favorite track is Swanky Adjacent which starts off with some great electronic tonalites then builds up from there with some classic synth sounds.

The album is loaded with awesome synth candy anchored by some fun beats and would make a good playlist addition for a summer road trip or just zipping around around town :^)

You can here more music by Chris at https://chrisfrainmusic.bandcamp.com/. He has an older release under the name Pattern Language. He is also one one of the hosts of the by the minute podcast Open the Podcast Door, Hal dedicated to the film 2001: A Space Odyssey.

My Single “Disconnected” on Spotify, iTunes, Bandcamp, Amazon, Google Play, CDBaby…

If you follow me on social media you have seen that I’ve released a new single. I wanted to wait till the song was available in wide distribution before I did an official blog post.

I’m happy to announced that “Disconnected” is now available on Bandcamp, Spotify, iTunes, Google Play, Amazon, YouTube, CDBaby, and pretty much every other online store and streaming service.

“Disconnected” is a new electro single and science fiction theme. It contains lots of synth ear candy dancing around in the stereo field for your headphones, big glitchy beats from classic drum machines, and some chiptune sprinkled on top to make your day a little brighter… [liner notes]

Help Support the Track

If You Like Digital Downloads

You can buy high-rez versions from my Bandcamp store. Alternatively, iTunes.

If You Listen on Spotify

Of course just passing it on to friends in general is appreciated.

Robert Henke – Interview + New Monolake Album “VLSI” + Video DEEP WEB Audiovisual Laser Installation and Performance

Interview

Image result for art music technology podcast

Check out this great interview with Robert Henke (aka Monolake, and founder of Ableton) on the Art + Music + Technology Podcast http://artmusictech.libsyn.com/podcast-146-robert-henke.

What can be said about Robert Henke that hasn’t already been said a thousand times? A tireless inventor, music producer, visual artist and programmer, Robert has been at the front of so much – and for me he’s been a constant inspiration. He’s also become a good friend over the years, and I can believe it’s taken me this long to interview him for the podcast. But I always want to be careful about his time; luckily, he’s at a good point for a chat, and you get to listen in!

In this talk, we go over Robert’s ideas about music gear, collaboration (he’s worked with some amazing people…), balancing different types of work, and choosing areas to explore. He also reveals himself to be an “obsessed pragmatic”: he’s has a love for detail, but he has to fight his inner voices to make sure that he produces work.

Who can’t understand that?

Robert has a new album as well – VLSI.

Robert’s work is discussed in the podcast. Here is a very cool video of one of his latest projects.

New Release: Jean-Michel Jarre – Electronica 2: The Heart of Noise

Electronica 2 – The Heart of Noise is a tribute to Luigi Russolo who proposed in 1913 in his futurist manifesto the Art of Noises a number of conclusions about how electronics and other technology will allow futurist musicians to "substitute for the limited variety of timbres that the orchestra possesses today the infinite variety of timbres in noises, reproduced with appropriate mechanisms". Russolo states that ''noise" first came into existence as the result of 19th century machines.

Here is an album trailer on YouTube – https://youtu.be/6pBUmLpY_qk.

As you can see in the video – as with the Electrionica 1, Jarre travels to around the globe visiting guest artists on their own turf. Guest artists include Pet Shop Boys, Rone, Julia Holter, Primal Scream, Gary Numan, Hans Zimmer, Edward Snowden, Peaches, Sébastien Tellier, The Orb, Siriusmo, Yello, Jeff Mills, Cyndi Lauper and Christophe.

Nice to see he shares my love for the Nord Lead :^)

More on this from Jarre's Facebook page:

Six years ago I had this idea of merging DNA with musicians and artists of different generations, linked, directly or indirectly, to electronic music in a kind of sharing process in a world where we're more isolated than ever by our smartphones and the Internet. In electronic music, unlike rock or jazz, we artists are isolated, like painters in their ateliers. That's something I wanted to explore, to really collaborate in person, rather than just share sound files on email. To combine my world with those of other people whom I respect, love and admire from more than five decades of electronic music. The idea is very much in phase with our times, to merge communities, celebrate the connections, but in a real, physical, organic, natural way.

I had no idea it was possible to work with so many artists on an album and still have a unity and cohesiveness of colors and sounds. For me, music is the most interactive mode of expression in ways that don't depend on a narrative. You can create your own film in your imagination. The kind of artists I worked with are more than just people writing songs. They create their own, very specific world. They are not telling a story, but allowing you to create your own. Every track on Electronica is an invitation for a journey, not in a new age sense, but in a very dynamic, dark, edgy, joyful or melancholic one. It's a trip where you visit different tribes of people, but at the end of the day, they're all part of the same family.

Electronica is a once in a lifetime project for me. It means the world to me to be trusted by so many incredible artist who became part of this journey. Its not over yet – See you on the road!

Yours,

Jean-Michel Jarre

Brian Eno’s “The Ship” Album is Here

The-ship

Brian Eno’s new album The Ship is here.

“Humankind seems to teeter between hubris and paranoia: the hubris of our ever-growing power contrasts with the paranoia that we’re permanently and increasingly under threat. At the zenith we realize we have to come down again… we know that we have more than we deserve or can defend, so we become nervous. Somebody, something is going to take it all from us: that is the dread of the wealthy. Paranoia leads to defensiveness, and we all end up in the trenches facing each other across the mud.

On a musical level, I wanted to make a record of songs that didn’t rely on the normal underpinnings of rhythmic structure and chord progressions but which allowed voices to exist in their own space and time, like events in a landscape. I wanted to place sonic events in a free, open space.

One of the starting points was my fascination with the First World War, that extraordinary trans-cultural madness that arose out of a clash of hubris between empires. It followed immediately after the sinking of the Titanic, which to me is its analogue. The Titanic was the Unsinkable Ship, the apex of human technical power, set to be Man’s greatest triumph over nature. The First World War was the war of materiel, ‘over by Christmas’, set to be the triumph of Will and Steel over humanity. The catastrophic failure of each set the stage for a century of dramatic experiments with the relationships between humans and the worlds they make for themselves.

I was thinking of those vast dun Belgian fields where the First World War was agonizingly ground out; and the vast deep ocean where the Titanic sank; and how little difference all that human hope and disappointment made to it. They persist and we pass in a cloud of chatter.

Written in the late sixties, Lou Reed’s song ‘I’m Set Free’ seems even more relevant now than it did then. Perhaps anybody who’s read Yuval Noah Harari’s ‘Sapiens’ will recognize the quiet irony of “I’m set free to find a new illusion”… and its implication that when we step out of our story we don’t step into ‘the truth’ – whatever that might be – but into another story.

This album is a succession of interleaved stories. Some of them I know, some of them I’m discovering now in the making of them.

Wave. After. Wave. After. Wave.”
