Pics and Video Snippets from March 2019 Beat Cypher Performances

On Thursday March 28th I performed a set at Beat Cypher at madelife in Boulder. Here is an Instagram video with some snippets of some of the performances including mine which is first. Thanks to https://www.instagram.com/eddiecii/ for footage.

I’m playing lead synth parts on “Gonna Rise” up from the album Fear Cannot Save Us (Spotify, iTunes).

It’s a custom synced oscillator preset from init on the Elektron Analog four.

Speaking of Elektron, this was a shakedown voyage for my Elektron trinity rig with Analog Four + Octatrack MKII + Digitone + Xkey Air 25 (Kentron USB Host) which I’ll be using for Mountain Skies electronic music festival in Asheville, NC in May.

Performing Set at Beat Cypher May 24th, 2018 on Elektron Digitakt + Video from Past Performance on Analog Four

I’ll be performing a set tonight (Thursday, May 24th) at the Beat Cypher event in Boulder. As the format is rapid-fire 10 minute sets and I’ll be improvising using only an Elektron Digitakt and using small a set of custom beat sketches as a starting point. My set is inspired by the Star Trek: The Original Series episode #21 “The Return of the Archons”  – ha!

Time: 7:30 0 10:00 PM
Location: Madelife, 2000 21st Street, Boulder, CO 80302 | Map

[Update 5/25/2018]

“Not of the Body” 5/24/2018

Here is a recording of the song I performed. I forgot to hit record during that live session – so this is a recording I made during a session in the studio earlier that day. The song was inspired by the ST:TOS episode “Return of the Archons”. It was performed live on an Elektron Digitakt and recorded straight to 2-track without edits.

More About Beat Cypher

madelife-beat-cypher-poster

Madelife, a creative accelerator in Boulder and frequent host venue for the Rocky Mountain Synthesizer Meetup, started hosting a very cool electronic music concert series late in 2017 called Beat Cypher. Each performer gets a 10-minute slot and signs up first come first serve. It’s Rapid-fire fun for performers and listeners!

Video from My Last Performance Using Only Elektron Analog Four

Here is a video of my performance from madelife Beat Cypher #2.Audio is from GoPro.

I challenged myself to do my set with just an Elektron Analog Four. The Analog Four has 4 analog synths, is only 4 note polyphonic in total and has chorus, delay and reverb on the master chain.

The performance is a combination of original presets, tweaked factory presets, live playing using the onboard chromatic keyboard, real-time sound design, use of some pre-defined original sequences with live arrangement and live sequencing. I’m using 4 kits” throughout (which you can switch to with no load-time or hickups). So all synthesis, no samples, no audio playback.

  • 00:00 Real-time synthesis with original preset
  • 00:34 Live arrangement with grooves, live-sound design, live play on chromatic keyboard
  • 4:00 Back to real-time synthesis using chromatic keyboard
  • 05:00 Things get pretty Logan’s Run bleepy and modular-like
  • 06:25 Freeze with the amazing on-board reverb

Concert Announcement + Show Notes: April 30th Noon-3pm, Synthesizer Sunday Event – A Union of Architecture and Sound Hosted by Doors Open Denver

Synthesizer Sunday, a Union of Architecture and Sound

The city of Denver has invited me and four other local electronic music artists to perform Sunday April 30th. This is part of the larger Door Open Denver Event.

Like architecture, which starts from basic elements – glass, sand, and stone to create a building – synthesizers start from basic sine waves modulated to produce sound into music. Join us for this open-air concert at one of Denver’s most prominent cultural facilities where five musicians taking turns playing synthesizers will dedicate their performances to the distinctive glass roof of the Galleria.

Particulars

When: Sunday April 39th 12 PM – 3 PM
Admission: Free
Facebook Event: https://www.facebook.com/events/1866714256917847/
Where: Denver Performing Arts Complex, Speer Boulevard and Arapahoe St, Denver, Colorado 80204.  We will be under the glass arch of the Galleria in front of the Buell Theater.

Performers

  1. Dane Terry 12:00 noon –  12.25
  2. Victoria Lundy  12:30 – 12:55
  3. Mark Mosher 1:00 – 1:25
  4. Chris Frain 1:30 – 1:55
  5. Kuxaan Sum 2:00 – 2: 25

Video from Preview Event

Last week, Kuxaan Sum and I paid an early morning visit to the Galleria with our rigs for a preview performance for CBS 4 News. Afterworld, we had an opportunity to play short improvised set with an almost empty Galleria. The natural reverb was AMAZING. Check out this video.

Show Notes for My Set

For my set, I’ll be doing structure improvisation using real-time synthesis using my favorite two hardware instruments – the Nord Lead 4 Synthesizers and the Elektron Octatrack Dynamic Performance Sampler

Elektron Octatrack Performance Sampler

The Elektron Octatrack Dynamic Performance Sampler is an incredibly deep instrument from Sweden that allows me to do real-time sound design with effects and morph between different instrument “states”. Prior to the performance, I’ve prepared a series of samples derived or inspired by the Galleria architecture, materials, and space.

Source 1 – Converting Images of the Galleria into Complex Audio Waveforms

I converted images of the Galleria into audio waveforms by resynthesizing the pictures using an additive synthesizer. Each pixel in the photo is converted into image planes with audio gain and pitch.

I then manipulated a play head which travels across these panes. As this happens, this additive synthesizer uses 520 oscillators produce partials of frequency, amplitude and waveform phase in real time. I programmed a series of sounds using this technique and recorded 2-29 second audio samples which I then transfer into the Octatrack for use in live performance on Sunday.

As you can see form the above spectral analysis, this process creates amazingly complex harmonic content.

Here is a video I made of the process.

Source 2 – Ambient recordings of the sound of the Galleria

My second set of sources for the Octatrack are recordings of the ambience of the this massive space as theater goers start arriving for a shows one evening.

Source 3 – Field Recordings of the Materials

Lastly, I spent some time to record a session where I played the Galleria itself. I used a drum stick, felt mallet, and drum brushes to gently play metal beams, door handles, and other parts of the Galleria bones. I’ve built a custom drum kit for the Octatrack using these elements.

Nord Lead 4 Performance Synthesizer

Part of the show concept is “like architecture, which starts from basic elements – glass, sand, and stone to create a building – synthesizers start from basic sine waves modulated to produce sound into music.” To this end I’m using custom presets on the wonderful Nord Lead 4 Performance Synthesizer (also made in Sweden) inspired by the Galleria.  I’ll be improvising and morphing these original sounds live.

I Hope To See You At the Show

As you can see this is going to be a truly amazing community event. I’m optimistic that this is the first of many such events where the city partners with local experimental music artists. If you live in the Denver or along the Front Range, I hope will be consider coming to the show to enjoy the music and sound in this wonderful space and support the concept.

Video & Photos: Behind-the-Scenes with Carbon Dioxide Ensemble with Filmmaker Taylor Dunne at Time + Space Fundraiser

Check out this fun behind-the-scenes video including interviews with Carbon Dioxide Ensemble Members, filmmaker Taylor Dunne (http://TaylorDunne.com) and an excerpt from our performance. It was an incredible night. The person who booked us gave us this feedback.

The carbon dioxide ensemble’s set was exceptionally killer. My teenage sister got to see your performance and was shocked/amazed/mind-warped.

I’ll take that!

When you get to the performance video where Taylor is improvising with 16mm film loops, check out how her performance is lighting up the ensemble like we’re using a strobe light!

Teaser Video for Oct 30th Miss America Vampire Halloween Concert at Walnut Room Denver

I produced this teaser video for the upcoming Miss American Vampire — songs on theremin by victoria lundy / The Night Before Halloween concert.

The music in the video is from Victoria’s new release. The visuals were performed in real-time and an example of what you’ll see during her set. We’re also doing projection mapping for this show.

Doors are at 8, and show is at 9. I’m kicking off the night and will perform a set made up of dark techno and dark ambient. I’ll be playing a few composed pieces from albums but mostly news music. I’ve also upped my game with my own visuals. Happy Halloween!

Live Performance Video – Part 1 Boulder Synthesizer Meetup August 11, 2015

11873654_10205820392721397_6945167335189977591_n (1)

This video is part 1 of a live cinematic electronica set I performed at the Boulder Synthesizer Meetup on August 11th 2015 at the Walnut room in Denver. In this video I’m performing both the music and the visuals.

https://vimeo.com/136179823

In part 1 I perform an extended version of “Gonna Rise Up” from the album Fear Cannot Save Us” markmosher.bandcamp.com/album/fear-cannot-save-us. For this piece, I was doing live arrangement on the Octatrack plus playing lead synth on the Waldorf Blofeld. The lead patch is an original patch from INIT using OSC2 & 3 for sync with mod wheel. The original lead patch on the album version was done with Zebra 2. To retain some of its character, I used Extreme Sample Convert to multi-sample the Zebra patch then import into the Blofeld for the source for Oscillator 1.

Rig Notes:
This set was performed only on Octatrack dynamic performance sampler with original field recordings and sonic elements from albums plus a Waldorf Blofled keyboard with original presets.

Recording Notes:
Live audio was recorded on a Zoom H2n fed by my sub-mix to house via Mackie 402VLZ3. Main footage is from a GoPro with secondary foot from my friend Chris Frain.

Visuals Notes:
The ONLY video source is from live camera input being run through layers of custom Resolume presets controlled by an Arturia Beatstep live.

Photos and Videos from Concréte Mixer II Solstice Concert in Denver

1399708_806147552743165_7167989665167865552_o

Below are photos and video from the June 20th Concréte Mixer II Solstice Concert in Denver.

Excerpt from My Set

First up is a video excerpt of my solo performance.

This is an excerpt from my set at Concréte mixer/solstice: an evening of solo and collaborative musique concrete.live concert at the Walnut Room in Denver, CO 6/21/2014.

In this section of the piece, I’m manipulating a large number of samples (field recordings and small snippets from random needle drops on vinyl from a wide variety old recordings) in real-time with morphing, live sequencing, and playing back samples in both chromatic and slots mode using an Elektron Octatrack. Visuals are real-time based on live camera input via Resolume.

Finale with All

Next is a video excerpt from the finale. Throughout the night, each performer and act did individuals sets. For the last song, all artists but one took the stage to do a no rules improv. In stage are from left to right Tom Murphy, Victoria Lundy, Charles De Graaf , David Britton, Rick Reid, me, and Thomas Lundy. The entire piece was around 10 minutes long. What I like about this section of the improv was that 4 of the artists were using vocal samples which created the din-like sound of a crowd, but with an interesting movement to it.Near the tail end of this video you can hear the copper heart which I’m sampling and turning into Octatrack instruments.

Photos

Lastly, I posted quite a few photos in a Flickr album of shots taken throughout the night.
