New Live YouTube Series on Percussa SSP Euorack Module by Matthew Hodson (MATTHS) – Sundays at 6pm UK time (11am MST)

A new live video series by Matthew Hodson (MATTHS) on the Percussa SSP Eurorack Module began on June 16th, 2019. the live stream/video is broadcasted on YouTube Live on Sunday’s at 6pm UK time (11am MST).

Visit http://www.youtube.com/matthsmatthsmatths to join and watch the stream.

Jump in the chat room as Matthew will be joined by Bert Schiettecatte, Percussa’s founder and lead engineer/designer, who will be there to answer questions about the SSP as the live stream unfolds.

The series is a live stream hosted by Matthew himself, where he will share his perspective on integrating the SSP into a professional music production context. The series will consist of multiple in-depth videos highlighting everything the SSP is capable of: sampling, granular and wavetable synthesis, external and internal CV modulation, MIDI control and CV generation, sequencing, effects processing, multichannel recording, FM and traditional subtractive synthesis. The videos will also cover polyphonic and multitimbral patch design. Each video will focus on a different aspect of the SSP.

The first three episodes are on YouTube. I’ve watched the first and was in the live stream chat room for the second one and thought it the series was a great way to both learn how the Percussa SSP works, what it sounds like, and how to create with it.

Live Album and Concert Video: “Live at Mountain Skies 2019”

In early May 2019 I flew out to attend and perform an original electronic music set at the Mountain Skies festival near Asheville, NC. It was a really fun weekend and I had a great time performing one track from 2014 album Fear Cannot Save Us, plus 4 brand new songs. Checkout a video of the entire set below plus a brand new live album from this same show.

Live Performance Video

My full performance is available on YouTube. It’s a 1080p video with live album audio mixed with live room audio so if you have a chance play it on a big screen with headphones or a home theater system :^)

You can jump to individual songs within this video using links below.

  • 00:00 – “Gonna Rise Up” (Octatrack MKII, Analog Four for leads)
  • 3:13 – “The Strange Case of the Dancing Automatons” (Intro is field recordings in Octatrack MKII, rest of the song is ALL Digitone)
  • 09:11 – “Disconnected” (Octatrack MKII, Analog Four MKI)
  • 14:20 “Techno Planet” (ALL Analog Four MKI :^) )
  • 19:29 “Mind the Gap” (Octatrack MKII)

Live Album

I’ve also released live audio recordings of the songs from this set as a “name your price” album on Bandcamp. These songs are presented as I performed them to 2-track during the show with no edits other than trimming and fading to break the continuous set up into this 5 song album with minimal gaps.

Performance Notes

The music was performed using only Elektron Analog Four MKI, Octatrack MKII, and Digitone with no external gear other than a CME Xkey Air 25 MIDI controller which I used with the Analog Four. Original field recordings made on location in Boulder; Denver; Bath & London England. I vocoded my voice in the studio using Ableton Live and Tone2 Electra2.

Visuals provided by Michael O’Bannon.

Photos from Event

Thanks!

A big thanks to Tony Gerber and Mike Metlay for organizing the event. Also a big thanks to all the volunteers at the festival, Radio Spiral, the venue White Horse at Black Mountain, and all the other artists for making it such a fantastic weekend. Also thanks to Geary Yelton and Paul A Vnuk Jr for sharing pics. Lastly thanks to Michael O’Bannon for providing my visuals.

Trippy Teaser Video for my Alien Invasion Song “Infected” + Thoughts on 2019 Visuals

Last summer I was experimenting with some interactive visuals with live camera input (as I do) to create an an alien overlay on my face. Was this inspired by John Carpenter’s They Live? Of course it was – haha.

I thought it worked really well for my song “Infected” from my album REBOOT and made a teaser video which I posted on YouTube and Instagram.

“Infected” is very trippy track where an infected human begins to sense they are merging into another consciousness. Available on Spotify, Apple Music, and beyond…

Alien Invasion Series

For those new to my music, I have three mostly beat-driven cinematic electronic music albums. REBOOT tells the invasion tale from the human point of view. I Hear Your Signals is the same story from alien point of view with inverted emotional curves. Fear Cannot Save Us is the third album, released in 2014, tells the story of the transformation of a human to an alien hybrid being. In 2019 I released the single “Disconnected” which is relate to this story.

Visit my Music to listen to all these works.

Thoughts on Visuals for My New 2019 Performances

Phase 1 – Focus on Music and Collaborate with Others

I’m preparing a new show for 2019 to perform many new songs I’ve composed (like “Disconnected”) and to bring back some songs from these previous albums that I’ve never played live. See my home page for events info.

For earlier shows with this set of songs I’m just going to focus on the music and collaborate with visuals artists where possible.

For example, My first performance of this set will be at the Mountain Skies festival http://spaceformusic.net/mountainskies/ at White Horse, Black Mountain just outside of Asheville.

For this festival I’ve asked the amazing Michael O’Bannon to do my visuals. Michael had done some of my visuals in the past at Electro-Music NY I’m really excited to collaborate with him again. You can see a photo and video of a past performance where he provided visuals below.

Phase 2 – Incorporate New Visuals & Still Collaborate with Others When Possible

After I’m satisfied that I have a solid set on the music side, I’ll circle back and start working on original visuals. I have many new ideas on the look feel and technology behind this which I’ll blog about here in the future.

That being said I love collaborating so I look forward to also doing some shows with other visualist even after I have my own companion visuals.

Pics and Video Snippets from March 2019 Beat Cypher Performances

On Thursday March 28th I performed a set at Beat Cypher at madelife in Boulder. Here is an Instagram video with some snippets of some of the performances including mine which is first. Thanks to https://www.instagram.com/eddiecii/ for footage.

I’m playing lead synth parts on “Gonna Rise” up from the album Fear Cannot Save Us (Spotify, iTunes).

It’s a custom synced oscillator preset from init on the Elektron Analog four.

Speaking of Elektron, this was a shakedown voyage for my Elektron trinity rig with Analog Four + Octatrack MKII + Digitone + Xkey Air 25 (Kentron USB Host) which I’ll be using for Mountain Skies electronic music festival in Asheville, NC in May.

My Sci-fi Cinematic Electronica album “Fear Cannot Save Us” Turns 5

mark-mosher-fear-cannot-save-us-cover-550

My album Fear Cannot Save Us turns 5 years old today! While I’ve released singles such as “Disconnected” and podcast episodes on Sonic Encounters – this was my last full studio album. Three years in the making, it was album #3 in a series of alien invasion concept albums containing original cinematic electronica, dark ambient, and experimental tracks.

To celebrate the occasion the album is available at special pricing on Bandcamp for $5 US for the month of March. The Bandcamp edition also features a 10 page digital booklet with liner notes and photos.

It is also album is available at standard pricing on all major outlets including Spotify, iTunes / Apple Music,Amazon MP3, Google Play, CD Baby and more.

Making of the Album

Checkout the making of the album on Darwin Grosse’s Art + Music + Technology Podcast #23

… This last week he put out a new album Fear Cannot Save Us, which is a continuation of the science fiction themes from his earlier albums Reboot and I Hear Your Signals, but is also one of the finest classic electronic music albums I’ve heard in a while. So I took the opportunity to quiz him on the making of the album, how he mixes sci-fi themes with electronic music, and how he produced such an excellent sounding product.

Note, the album was mastered by Gannon Kashiwa. I did the cover with art direction assistance from Dave Weed and Victoria Lundy (Cuttlefish Arts).

About the Album

It tells the story of the transformation of a human to an alien hybrid being. The album takes you through our hero’s journey as they rapidly coevolve and become self-aware and aware of their mission for revolution. Assuming evolution does not imply direction, could the change benefit mankind?

On another level this album is also allegorical. It’s about tolerance for people who seem different and strange to us. It’s also about people accepting change in themselves. On a third level, the album and the series are a nod to my love for classic Sci-fi films

markmosher-invader-cam

The albums in this series are orchestrated with classic and contemporary synth sounds and loaded with sound design “ear candy” for synth and Sci-fi fans looking for a soundtrack experience for an epic movie yet to be filmed. If you listen to the tracks in album order, the story unfolds, and the titles of the songs give away the basic plot of each scene, but it’s left up to you – the listener – to fill in the story details. Each song was written to stand on its own as well. The dynamic arrangements and production will reward you for listening with high-quality headphones, stereo systems, or home theater systems.

Bringing this album to life is the culmination of over three years of work. This work included going deep and studying the sound design possibilities of a small number of monster digital synthesizers such as Absynth, Zebra, and ElectraX, as well as circuit-modelled analog synthesizers such as ACE and Saurus. To give the album an organic feel and sense of place, I manipulated my field recordings using Ableton Sampler. I also worked to find ways to “see through the eyes” of great guitarists, not to emulate guitar tone per se, but to instead apply concepts like non-linear distortion and wave shaping within feedback circuits to add more dynamics, emotion and expression to my sounds and performances. I hope you enjoy the sonic detail and emotion that will emerge and evolve with multiple listens.

Make sure you check out the other entries in the series, Abum #1 – “Reboot” tells the tale of the original alien invasion from the human point of view. Album #2 – “I Hear Your Signals” – tells the same story but from the alien point of view with inverted emotional curves.

Bandcamp, Spotify, iTunes / Apple Music,Amazon MP3, Google Play, CD Baby

Thanks

Thanks again to all who have supported this album throughout the years.

My Single “Disconnected” on Spotify, iTunes, Bandcamp, Amazon, Google Play, CDBaby…

If you follow me on social media you have seen that I’ve released a new single. I wanted to wait till the song was available in wide distribution before I did an official blog post.

I’m happy to announced that “Disconnected” is now available on Bandcamp, Spotify, iTunes, Google Play, Amazon, YouTube, CDBaby, and pretty much every other online store and streaming service.

“Disconnected” is a new electro single and science fiction theme. It contains lots of synth ear candy dancing around in the stereo field for your headphones, big glitchy beats from classic drum machines, and some chiptune sprinkled on top to make your day a little brighter… [liner notes]
