Ableton “Spectral Textures” Live Pack is Now Free

Ableton released a new Live Pack called Spectral Textures.

The Spectral Textures Pack is now free. New sounds can bring new ideas, so we’ll be offering more free sounds soon.

https://www.ableton.com/en/blog/ideas-offers-making-music-home/

You can download the pack here https://www.ableton.com/en/packs/spectral-textures.

One part field recordings and one part additive synthesis, Spectral Textures is a unique instrument that blends together two distinct worlds of sound to create vibrant atmospheres, textures and progressions…

The majority of Spectral Textures’ presets consist of two sound elements – spectral samples created with a digital additive synthesizer and field recordings – in combination with effects…

Sourced from an abandoned garden center in eastern Germany, an assortment of unique field recordings infuse many of Spectral Textures with a vibrant, real-world timbres. The site’s dilapidated greenhouse and a variety of scattered metal, wood and glass objects found there provided some truly fascinating sound sources…

Ableton Releases CV Tools + View Mind Map Summary + Links to How-To Videos from Moog Demo Library

Heads up, Ableton just released a free set of Max for Live devices called CV Tools. In this post I’ll offer some info on overview videos, a summary mind map I made to give you a one-page perspective on all this, links to a collection of videos just released on Moog’s Demo Library YouTube Channel, and lastly a link for more info and how to get CV Tools.

Overview

Intro video from Ableton

Now you can control your modular and CV-based gear with Ableton Live 10 Suite. And because you own Ableton Live 10 and Max for Live, CV Tools is free for you.

CV Tools is a Pack of 10 devices that allows you to send and modulate control voltage between your modular setup and Ableton Live using a compatible dc-coupled audio interface.

Plus, the included Rotating Rhythm Generator and CV Utility devices give you modular-style workflows inside Live or with a hardware setup that doesn’t use CV-based equipment.

Mind Map Summary of CV Tools

I used mindmeister to create a summary mind map. It’s a rather large map so you may want to click here to view the interactive mind map version. You can see more of my public mind maps here BTW https://www.mindmeister.com/users/channel/103187.

Isotonik Studios Releases ADM DRUMS by AfroDJMac + A Video Walkthrough of this Epic Collection

Isotonik Studios and my friend and amazing sound designer AfroDJMac just came together to release ADM Drums by AfroDJMac. The collection contains drum samples and presets made over the years by the prolific AfroDJMac which were then curated and organized by Isotonik Studios’ resident Ableton Live Pack expert Animus Inviduous (aka PerforModule).

An amalgamated collection of more than a hundred and fifty Drum Racks, one thousand Drum Loops, and two thousand Drum Hits crafted by AfroDJMac over the years, organized into a single mega pack which installs the vast content into one’s Ableton Live Library in a usable structure for instantaneous creativity.

The end result is an epic Live pack containing 151 Drum Racks +1430 Loops + 80 MIDI Clips + 4 instrument racks + 2333 drum hits!

AjfoDJMac made a nice video walkthrough of the pack that’s which you can see on Vimeo.

First Impressions

I’ve received an NFR copy and so far I’ve only been able to spend on hour with ADM Drums but I’m pretty excited about the release so I wanted to do a post on first impressions.

Install is a one-step process and the Live Pack installs directly into Live’s factory packs folder. With this many racks, loops, clips – this is a real time saver both on install and when you go looking for things later.

While I’ve barely scratched the surface  – I’ve already found the drum racks very useful and inspiring. I especially dig “ADM COIN-OP Drums” and the VHS kits. There are five 64-pad kits in the “Experimental Kits” folder which are super fun – such as “ADM PO 64 Pad Drums” and “ADM Tension”.

adm-64-pad2

Ableton Push 2 Tip: When using 64-pad kits, press the “Layout” button on the right side to cycle through to 64-pad mode.

The organization of this pack is amazing and even includes an extensive Lessons File that gives you information on each kit and even links you back to AfroDJMac’s original blog post from when these packs were first released. This is pretty handy as you’ll be able to then watch the detailed videos AfroDJMac made for each kit.

Price is Price £59.00 which is about $77 US at the time of this article. My view is this is an amazing value when you consider that you are getting fantastic source material and meticulous racks (and more) by AfroDJMac – all wrapped with Isotonik Studios amazing organization. The end result are some inspiring kits you’ll be using right out of the gate –  and more importantly – all this organization will make it a snap for you to make your own custom drum racks.

Sound Design Project: Honored to be a Contributor to The Round Wavetable Pack

roundwaveloop.gif

I’m psyched and honored to be a part of this sound design project for the amazing new Ableton Wavetable Synth – The Round Wavetable Pack. AfroDJMac who curated this project had this to say about it…

Ableton Live 10 comes with a beast of a new synthesizer, Wavetable. Wavetable, as expected, uses wavetable synthesis to produce a near endless potential of sounds. To celebrate this new instrument, I’ve enlisted the help of 6 talented producers and sound designers. I ask them to send along a few presets using Wavetable, in any genre or style they wished. The result is 32 Wavetable and Instrument Rack presets that showcase the depth and power of Wavetable, as well as some of the other new devices in Ableton Live 10.

Contributors to this pack are:

  1. AfroDJMac – http://www.afrodjmac.com
  2. Isaac Cotec –  https://subaqueousmusic.com
  3. Thomas Glendinning – https://elphnt.co.za/

  5. pAtches – https://patches.zone
  6. Josh Spoon – http://www.theproducerskitchen.com/
  7. Mark Towers – https://marktowers.net/

Here is a video overview of the pack by AfroDJMac.

Here is a video of early work on one of my presets “Dark Star” that made into this Live Pack.

A big thanks to AfroDJMac for curating all this!

Reminder – Ableton Sale Ending January 11th – Consider Operator and Max for Live

ableton-sale-ends-jan-11

A reminder – the Ableton Sale Ends January 11th – save 20% on Live, Live upgrades, Max for Live, Push, and Live Packs.

Can’t Make The Leap to Suite?

Operator – FM Joy!

If you are an existing Live user and you can’t make the jump to Suite, you may want to consider picking up an essential instrument like Ableton Operator à la carte.

Extend Live with Max for Live

Max for Live is also available à la carte and is on sale sale https://www.ableton.com/en/shop/#max-for-live. You don’t need to be a programmer to take advantage of Max for Live. There are a huge number of  “instruments” and “effects” available you can just jump right into. So, by buying into Max for Live you could then take advantage of the many commercial Max for Live devices on sale.

There are also  large number of devices made by third parties and those in the Max for Live community – such as those at http://www.MaxforLive.com. For example, in the video below, I’m using a free M4L device called Granulator II (developed by Ableton founder Robert Henke) for granular synthesis with expressive modulation via an XBOX 360 controller made possible by the super cool free device MultimapperXBOX360 0.6 from the community MaxforLive.com. So how this went was – “Hey I think I’d like do some granular synthesis with an XBOX 360 joystick”. Because I had Max for Live, I went from idea to expressive performance in like 10 minutes.

Here is a video with Robert Henke discussing Granulator II.

Art + Music + Technology Podcast 056: Brian Funk (AfroDJMac)

Photo Nov 30, 3 18 01 PM

Darwin Grosse's latest podcat is up – this time with my Brian Funk (aka AfroDJMac). Listen here http://artmusictech.libsyn.com/podcast-056-brian-funk-afrodjmac.

Brian is known for his prolific work to create amazing racks for Ableton Live. I collaborated with Brian on  the Ableton Rack #40: Zebra Attack and Ableton Rack #40: Zebra Attack II so I was super excited to introduce him to Darwin Grosse so we could all get a behind-the-scenses look into Brian's work.

My friend Mark Mosher doesn't get adamant too often, but when he does, I have to listen. He was adamant about getting into his friend AfroDJMac, and the work that he's been doing on Ableton Live packs. I jumped into my research (i.e., I took things for a quick drive then started digging deeper), and was really impressed with the work. Reached out to see if he'd be up for a quickie chat, and he jumped on the opportunity.

So you get this – my Thanksgiving gift to you. Great talk with a really insightful programmer, sound designer, songwriter and Ableton Certified Trainer.

I always like when someone opens a door for me to explore. Brian's ideas about vocal music (especially mixed with electronic music concepts) are really unique, and the way that he mixes music and teaching is also very interesting. Listen to his work here, and enjoy the discussion!

I just bought the "Juno 106 Ableton Pack” from AfroDJMac  and wanted to turn you on to it.

It contains 22 unique Ableton Instrument racks, each one created with a unique preset from the Juno 106.  I’ve added controls for 8 macros to each instrument, which allows them to be manipulated and twisted into new and ever changing sounds.

AfroDJMac and Mark Mosher Zebra Attack Free Ableton Live Pack

I'm excited to announce I just finished a collaboration with NY artist AfroDJMac who's been "crushing it" by releasing an Ableton Live Pack every week for 37 weeks! It's week 38 and we collaborated on "AfroDJMac and Mark Mosher Zebra Attack [Ableton Live Rack #38]."  What a great honor to be part of his series.

mm_fm_motion_linear_cropI used U-HE Zebra 2 to make original harmonic content from INIT. I ended up with a patch that generated 1 bar FM wave sequence. Each wave was created in real-time by modulating FM with a stepped LFO with each step at a 16thnote at 120bpm to accommodate slicing into a rack. I resampled, and then handed off the samples to AfroDJMac. He racked them up in Ableton Live's Sampler and created an entirely new performance instrument based on the harmonic content including the ability to select a wave or sweep through the wavetable with an LFO!

AfroDJMac did a very detailed post on the rack including some production notes and screen shots of my work. I’ll included the video below but direct you to his post for the details and the download links. Enjoy and let me know what you think of the rack :^) For more of my sound design work visit patchlab.modulatethis.com. For more on AfroDJMac, see links at the bottom of this post.

Ableton Live Ableton Live Packs Synth: Ableton Operator

Get Inspired to Create Unique and Expressive Sounds with Operator Ambience Vol. 1 by Nick’s Tutorials

image

Nick’s Tutorials has released Operator Ambience Vol. 1. This is more than just a sound set and in addition to 20 Operator Patches the library also contains, 20 Live Clips, and 21 Videos.

I consider Ableton Operator (along with Ableton Sampler) to be required instruments for your rig. Operator is not only an expressive FM synth with a great user interface, it also can be used as a utility of sorts.  For example, you can use it to create discrete frequencies to say surgically give a kick drum more oomph. If you are new to Operator, your going to want to check out Nick’s previous tutorial Sound Design in Ableton Live: Operator.

Back to Operator Ambience Vol. 1 – according to the web site:

“Unlike larger, bloated libraries that attempt to cover every need possible, this affordable set is all about providing a tightly focused, thematically consistent set of ambient and atmospheric sounds.”

I really love this idea of a smaller deep thematic set of sounds and went the same route with my “Sounds From a Distant Outpost” library. As always Nick’s videos are informative and inspiring and even if you know Operator fairly well, odds are you’ll pick up on some new tricks.

The Digital download Contains:

image

  • 20 Operator patches that are completely open to reverse-engineering, tweaking, and learning
  • 20 modifiable Live Clips corresponding with the patches which provide musical phrases and inspiration
  • 1 substantive introductory video packed with Ableton Live tips as well as detailing common elements between all the patches
  • 20 short videos detailing unique or noteworthy aspects of each patch, giving insight into their construction and suggestions for using them
  • The same open inbox policy for support that I provide with all of my products (limited by my schedule, of course!)

Sample Audio

Here are some samples of the sounds, but remember, these are all under Macro control so you can take these same sounds and get different results using the knowledge you’ll pick up in these videos.

Operator Ambience Vol. 1 by nickmaxwell

Incredible Value & Highly Recommended

Of course the idea here is you’ll take these core concepts to improve existing patches or create your own unique patches. Nick’s tips on using velocity as a modulator throughout Operator alone are with the price of admission. This is an incredible value at $9.99 when you consider how much work Nick put into this package and I’m really glad I bought it. Highly recommended.

Ableton Colorado User Group Launches Free Collective Patch Library on GitHub

Ableton Colorado User Group in conjunction with DJNSM/Datamafia launches a Free Collective Patch Library on GitHub. The premise behind this site library is to create “an area where we can share, store, and expand our library using the basic building blocks of Ableton.“

The rules are simple: Original stuff please Nothing that requires wave files…[don't use FX that are exclusive to Suite]. Any patch config from the Ableton platfrom (Operator, Analog, Tension, M4L, etc) is welcome! Macro your patch and label the main 8 (or less) macro knobs. If you can't do it in 8 macros, turn it into multiple patches. When naming your knobs use logical names. One knob called "Tweak" is okay, but everything else should make sense (e.g. Filter Freq, wet/dry, distortion, etc) Yes! Max4Live patches are welcome!

Currently Marc the moderator adds patches to the library which users can download as one .zip file. This works well so far as there are no .wav files and these are patches within racks.

image

Things are just getting rolling but there are some fun patches out there already for Analog, FX, and Operator by DJNSM, James Tobin, and Chase Dobson (who’s been on the road doing backline Ableton Tech for Mike Posner), and yours truly.

James Tobin wins the award for patch names that make me LOL with…

“Sounds from a Distant Outpost” Ableton Live Pack Experiment Update – New Compositions + 1000 Downloads and Counting

image

Note: I'm updating this soundset so it's currently offline.

On December 17th, 2010 I released the Sounds from a Distant Outpost FREE Live Pack. Now, a little over a month later there have been over 1,000 downloads! Update on 6/13/2011: Just about to hit 2,000 downloads :^).

The most exciting thing for me is that a two people have REALLY dug into the 12 instruments in the Live Pack and have taken the time to compose tracks using ONLY instruments from this pack.

I’ve attached their two songs plus a third I created below. It’s pretty fantastic that while we didn’t directly collaborate all the works are quite different yet sound they all sound like they are telling stories from the same universe.

I think it would be pretty cool to create an album or score a film with multiple composers sharing the same custom yet limited instrument palette like this.

“Subdude's First Excursion To The Outpost”
First up is an awesome offering by James Tobin (aka Subdude), Denver, USA – www.jamestobin.info.

“Contact”

“Outpost Encounter”
This is a track I created to kick off the idea of everyone composing from this live pack.

Your Modulate This Holiday Gift is Ready – “Sounds From a Distant Outpost” Ableton Live Pack Plus Samples

Soundsfromadistantoutpost_blog_banner_02

Update: I'm updating this soundset so it is currenlty offline.

I'm very excited to announce that your FREE holiday gift is now ready for download! It is an Ableton Live Pack called Sounds from a Distant Outpost.

Sounds From a Distant Outpost is more than a sample sound library. Over 30 hours in the making, it is a set of 12 deep and expressive instrument racks that will transport you to a dark and distant outpost. From here you will be able to explore the sounds, machines, and creatures of this world.  These instruments will help spark your imagination and I hope inspire you to create your own soundtrack for this world. Of course, the instruments will also help add an interesting "edge" to any sound or music project.

The  source audio is made up of some of my field recordings as well  as original synthesized and re-synthesis harmonic content.  The concept for the instruments was based on a back-story I created as the project progressed. Fueled by the story and setting, I translated these source samples into Ableton Live racks and meticulously programmed them to create playable dynamic instruments which are placed under your command via macro parameters, velocity, after touch, and modulation wheel mappings. I've also provided the original source samples for the project so those who don't have Ableton Live will be able to use these samples as oscillator sources in synths like Absynth, Alchemy, ElectraX and Blofeld.

This project is also a social experiment. Rather than just provide a Live Pack, I've created a dedicated social microsite so you can share your notes and work with the library. I’ve also offered a SoundCloud drop box so you can share your original sound or music compositions.

I've had a great time creating – to coin a phrase – this  "story-based sound design with social remix" experiment.

I hope you enjoy your gift. I'm looking forward to your notes and creations.

As always, thanks your support. Have a happy, safe holiday filled with electronic music!
