AfroDJMac and Mark Mosher Zebra Attack Free Ableton Live Pack

I'm excited to announce I just finished a collaboration with NY artist AfroDJMac who's been "crushing it" by releasing an Ableton Live Pack every week for 37 weeks! It's week 38 and we collaborated on "AfroDJMac and Mark Mosher Zebra Attack [Ableton Live Rack #38]."  What a great honor to be part of his series.

mm_fm_motion_linear_cropI used U-HE Zebra 2 to make original harmonic content from INIT. I ended up with a patch that generated 1 bar FM wave sequence. Each wave was created in real-time by modulating FM with a stepped LFO with each step at a 16thnote at 120bpm to accommodate slicing into a rack. I resampled, and then handed off the samples to AfroDJMac. He racked them up in Ableton Live's Sampler and created an entirely new performance instrument based on the harmonic content including the ability to select a wave or sweep through the wavetable with an LFO!

AfroDJMac did a very detailed post on the rack including some production notes and screen shots of my work. I’ll included the video below but direct you to his post for the details and the download links. Enjoy and let me know what you think of the rack :^) For more of my sound design work visit patchlab.modulatethis.com. For more on AfroDJMac, see links at the bottom of this post.

A Video Roundup of Sampling Past and Present

image

I’ve been sampling since the 80’s when I got an Ensoniq Mirage. I’ve since moved on to software and now use Ableton Sampler, and Camel Audio Alchemy for sample-based work these days. I still find sample-based sound design fascinating and recently found some cool videos which illustrate how far we’ve come over the last few decades.

PAST
First, I stumbled across a Synthtopia Post “Bob Moog Introduces The Fairlight CMI” which had four videos, one of which is shown below. “Bog Moog Fairlight Part 2 on YouTube:

http://www.youtube.com/v/ydxFc6o64WA&hl=en_US&fs=1&&hl=en</embed></object></div>";” src=”https://modulatethis.files.wordpress.com/2009/12/7ff2b-6a00d83451cae869e20120a6fbf730970b-pi.jpg&#8221; style=”BORDER-BOTTOM-STYLE: none; BORDER-RIGHT-STYLE: none; BORDER-TOP-STYLE: none; BORDER-LEFT-STYLE: none” />

Next is a great video of Peter Gabriel using the Fairlight in 1982. The video has some awesome footage of Peter Grabriel and company recording found sound and manipulating sound from the Farilight. He also discusses the use of non-lyrical human voice in music.

Next a 1984 video with Quincy Jones and Herbie Hancock.

PRESENT
Using found sound with Absynth.

Next is a nice tutorial video of using Alchemy to create a multisampled instrument.

Last, a video of Robert Henke using my favorite Ableton Sampler:

Two New Ableton Inc. Videos – DJ Jazzy Jeff & Life as an Ableton Developer

If you are into Ableton Live I think you’ll enjoy the following videos.

DJ Jazzy Jeff on Ableton Live
I saw reference to this on Synthtopia. It’s a an Ableton Inc video featuring DJ Jazzy Jeff on how he uses Ableton Live. At 2:30 he discusses his use of Ableton Sampler to slice segments of entire songs into key zones. Near the end he concludes that “If everyone knew what this [Ableton Live] did, this would probably be the main program that everyone would use.”

Life as an Ableton Developer
The second video via twitter.com/abletonfreaks is an Ableton Inc, video containing interviews with developers that work at Ableton. It's actually a recruiting video and offers a nice behind the scenes view of life at Ableton.

Ableton’s Summer of Sampler offer: Buy Live 8 and Get Sampler Free + New Sampler Move + Free Samplification Audio Pack for Sampler

image

I Love Sampler!
I’m a huge fan of of Sampler, Ableton’s advance sampling instrument.  I was recently corresponding with an artist who was considering Live and I wrote this about it:

“Ableton Sampler breaks with the classic sampler metaphor and supports a more immediate and "organic" workflow than other hardware or software samplers. This workflow is well suited to turning found sound into musical instruments. If you add Sampler to a rack in Live you can then easily assign 8 performance knobs to just about any parameter within Sampler.”

Sampler is simply a fantastic tool for helping you make your tracks more creative and unique. For sound designers it’s interface makes for rapid tweaking.

I just received some info from Ableton marketing.

Promotion
”Every customer who buys Ableton Live 8 before August 31st will get Sampler, Ableton's advanced sampling instrument, absolutely free. Sampler, worth 99 EUR/129 USD, combines traditional sampling features with advanced sound design functions.“

Details: http://www.ableton.com/summer-of-sampler

New Movie
Ableton has also produced a new move “Making sounds with Sampler"—which shows “how Sampler transforms a single piano note into an organic, modulating synth bass”. Watch on YouTube.

Free audio pack for Sampler
”Samplification All Sampler owners, old and new, can also download the free Samplification audio package, which offers Construction Kits, Live Sets with drum clips, new Instrument Racks, new lessons, and sounds from Puremagnetik, Cycling '74 and Sonarte's Sound Objects Lite collection. Samplification is a Live Pack—450 MB download, 950 MB installed and requires Sampler and Live 8.0.4 or higher.”

Samplification is available here: http://www.ableton.com/samplification

3rd Party Tutorials:
I also want to mention that there are some nice video tutorials out there to help you learn Sampler.
