About The Show

This multimedia journey fuses original cinematic, sci-fi-inspired music with driving beats and synth ear candy, all synchronized to visuals enhanced by live camera effects that blend narrative and abstract visual elements. At the heart of his rig is the Synthstrom Deluge and Resolume.

The show takes place in Beautiful Tomorrows™, the galaxy’s first temporal theme park, where audience members experience an attraction called Temporal Odyssey™.

Blending narrative storytelling with musical performance in a 20/80 ratio, each original cinematic techno song transports the audience on a unique temporal journey. These journeys unfold like episodes in an anthology series, drawing inspiration from classic 1960s shows like “The Outer Limits,” “The Twilight Zone,” and “Night Gallery.”

The theme park backdrop creates an ideal setting for these cinematic sci-fi musical journeys. Throughout the performance, live camera input and visual elements transform dynamically through effects chains, moving in synchronization with the live musical arrangement, synthesizer effects, and keyboard performance.

LIVE ARRANGEMENT AND PERFORMANCE

This isn’t just a movie with prerecorded music or visuals synced to a soundtrack.

Instead, each piece comes alive through live arrangements and real-time effects processing, with visuals that respond directly to the musical performance. This means I can extend solos, revisit different movements, and adjust the setlist spontaneously—making every performance unique.

Drawing inspiration from Pierre Schaeffer’s musique concrète and its transformation of everyday sounds into musical objects, this show creates a dynamic audiovisual experience where “musical objects” and “visual objects” interact and transform in real-time.

The Music

The original music blends cinematic elements and sci-fi themes with electronic beats and synth melodies. Every note was played or programmed by hand. In other words no loop libraries were used. In may cases Mark leaned on his experience as a sound designer to create original sounds.

The songs come to life through a combination of snippets of studio recordings, fresh sequenced interpretations, live effects and keyboard performances for lead synth action.

Key Tech & Technique

This show features live arrangement—not a pre-recorded movie with timecode or fixed soundtrack.

I use Resolume for visuals (which I’ve been using 11+ years), and Synthstrom Deluge (which I’ve been using for 4+ years) on Community firmware 1.2.1 (Chopin).

  1. The show incorporates 160 distinct visual cues across three layers of “video objects”—inspired by Pierre Schaeffer’s musical object concept.
  2. Each layer functions like a custom synthesizer preset, blending source elements with visual effects. The approach dynamically integrates diverse media—photos, graphics, video, and live camera input—with effects controlled by timeline, BPM, and modulation.
  3. Integrated system using Resolume (visuals) and Synthstrom Deluge (show control + hosting synths, samples, and sequences) with MIDI-triggered visual cues.
  4. Deluge serves as the MIDI clock, which enables visuals to complement and highlight key moments in the temporal narrative. I sometimes heavily manipulate tempo (like in the song “Intra Machina”) to do extreme warping on Deluge, and Resolume follows. I use this is “Intra Machina” song where I heavily manipulated the clock and visuals followed.
  5. Deluge is MIDI host for Launchkey Mini MK4 which for live performance with keys, drum pads, and encoders for tweaking synth params.
  6. Deluge Real-time audio effects both per-track and global.
  7. Deluge’s ability to queue a song while one is playing makes it so so I’m not locked to a particular sequence of scenes.

The simultaneous live arrangement of visuals and music creates a dynamic performance environment. MIDI messages coordinate timing while enabling spontaneous artistic choices in both musical arrangements and synth parts.

This flexibility allows me to modify the set list, adjust arrangements, and change the duration of musical movements on the fly—enabling me to adapt the show to different set lengths while creating unique performance variations.

Deluge Community Firmware

It’s worth noting that this show heavily relies on Deluge Community firmware Chopin 1.2.1 such as:

  1. Performance Mode for global FX which allowed me to ditch using an iPad and an audio interface for master FX chain.
  2. Quantized Stutter
  3. Fill Clips
  4. Clip modes to automate section launch when I’m busying doing other things (like Ableton Follow Actions)
  5. Countdown to Event for situational awareness
  6. Drawing automations with gird using “Automation View”
