New Sonic Encounters Soundscape “Replicant’s Dream” + Video of Improv Session w/ Analog Four and Interactive Visuals w/ Resolume

I just released a Bandcamp subscriber preview of a new soundscape called “Replican’ts Dream” obviously inspired by Bladerunner. Music and visuals improvised and recorded in one real-time pass. Music is performed on Elektron Analog Four MKI using 4 tracks with no sequencing. Visual synthesis in Resolume Arena.

This video will also give you a sense of new visuals I’m working on for my live set for online streaming (and eventually for in-person performances). I make use of visual synthesis on various sources including live camera input and control the set in real-time with a LaunchPad PRO MK3 custom mode.

New Sonic Encounters Soundscape “Ghosts of Time and Space” Featuring Samples from Empty Vessel’s Ghosts Audio Edition + Video of Improv Session

Here is the video from a session where I improvised a new soundscape called “. This was improvised on Ableton Live 10 with Push 2.

Sources Samples

While I mostly do my own sound design I’ve been enjoying using libraries from others to introduce pleasant surprises (“chance operations”) into some of my improvisational pieces. All the source samples for this song are from the Ghosts sound pack which I bought from my friend and independent New Zealand based sound designer Greg Cole (aka Empty Vessel https://store.emptyvessel.co.nz ).

This was originally released as a samples and presets for the TAL sampler, but I brought these into Ableton (notes on this below).

Greg takes such great care in producing and mastering his source samples I’m happy to report he also just provided these samples as a stand-alone WAV edition here https://store.emptyvessel.co.nz/p/cl3h5w.

Sonic Encounters Podcast Coming to an End But Lives On as an Album Series + New Song

I first launched the Sonic Encounters podcast in almost 5 years ago in June of 2015. In June of 2017 I also started releasing podcast seasons as albums on Bandcamp.

Today I’m writing to let you now that I’ve decided to retire the podcast and continue forward with Sonic Encounters exclusively as an album series on Bandcamp.

So a big thanks all of you out there who listened to and subscribed to the past episodes. Below is more info on how to continue to stream or download past episodes plus get new songs as I release them.

Streaming and Downloading Past Episodes

You can still stream all past episodes that were released as albums for free via Bandcamp. The advantage of having these as Bandcamp releases is that you can also buy and then download high resolution audio versions of the songs and in some cases get bonus tracks.

Volume 03 is In The Works + New Song

Active subscribers to my bandcamp subscription (learn more here) get access to all my new music plus my entire back catalog of 12 releases which includes Volume 01 and Volume 02 of Sonic Encounters. Subscribers also get early access to Volume 03 which is in the works.

Subscribers get access to tracks of Volume 03 as I’m creating the album. As of this post, the album has 2 tracks from the podcast before I shut it down, plus a brand new track called…

“Ancient Savanna (A Post Modern Ambient Bossa Nova Ice Cream Sandwich)”.

It’s a soundscape with a narrative arc and is the third song on the forthcoming Sonic Encounters Volume 03 album. It’s filled with some throwback rhythms and gorgeous analog tones.

Story:

Quite some time ago an alien child instantiated our reality using some silly game they found on their parent’s hand-me-down computer. As time went on they noticed the rainforests were being destroyed for a variety of reasons which would soon end the simulation. The child was quite attached to some of the people in the simulation and of course didn’t want to have restart the simulation all over again from beginning. So, without their parent’s permission, the child opted to buy the in-app purchase to heal the rainforests by turning back the rainforest clocks. Play now continues.

I manipulated a photo I took while walking to through the rainforest of Great Otway National Park on the way to Henderson Falls. Some of the trees are estimated to be over 200 years old.

I’m happy to announce that season 03 of the Sonic Encounters soundscapes podcast is under way with a new song called “Please Press 3“. Sonic Encounters began 4 years ago and this new soundscape brings us to 22 songs and over 2 hours and 40 minutes or original music.

Of course the whales have been evolving as well – and – unbeknownst to us, they have been patiently plotting and waiting for the right time put things back in balance. This is the soundtrack of an expedition to an ancient ice cave. As you descend deep into the cavern hear surreal sound of the wind blended with your own scanning equipment reverberating through massive cave system. At around the 7:00 minute mark, your systems start picking up some movement in the cave. You’ve got a bad fielding about this – so you initiate emergency ascent at 8:20.
