GoPro Video of My Set at Rocky Mountain Synthesizer Meetup / Beat Cypher Halloween Collaboration 2019

This video is made up of some GoPro footage from Rocky Mountain Synthesizer Meetup #74 – “Special Event: Beat Cypher Halloween Collaboration + Intro to SP-404”.
I’m performing two songs from my album I Hear Your Signals https://markmosher.bandcamp.com/album/i-hear-your-signals.

First up is “I Can See Them” performed on Percussa AudioCubes and Ableton Live.

This is followed by “Resolute” on keys, Novation LaunchPad X with AudioCubes providing interactive lighting via automation from Live dummy clips.

This event was a collaboration with madelife in Boulder, CO who hosts a monthly madelife BEAT CYPHERS. Event link https://www.meetup.com/Rocky-Mountain-Synth/events/264878800/.

I Hear Your Signals is album #2 in a series of alien invasion concept albums containing original electronica, dark ambient, and experimental tracks. This second album in the series, released in 2010, is a retelling of Album #1 – but – from the alien point of view inverted emotional curves!

“Tonalities from Orbit #3” – Channeling the Krell with an Improvisation on Nord Lead 4

“Tonalities from Orbit #3” is a video recording of a live interactive soundscape and visual improvisation performed at the Rocky Mountain Synthesizer Meetup October 12th, 2016 at Globe Hall in Denver. It’s performed using only a Nord Lead 4 with custom patches from INIT and Resolume using live camera input with no pre-recorded sequences.

The theme of this meetup was “The Sound of 50’s SciFi: Theremins and Circuits” where Victoria Lundy did a lecture on Thereminist Sam Hoffman  who’s work is synonymous with the iconic SciFi sound. I did a talk on the work of Louis and Bebe Barron to create electronic tonalities for the groundbreaking film “Forbidden Planet”.

After the lectures, Victoria and I each did a performance illustrating some ideas from the talk. In this video I’m using the Nord Lead 4 to to channel the Krell.

Enjoy,

Synth Performance Tip: Rehearse in the Many Lighting Conditions

DSC09519

Can you read the labels on the knobs and switches? Neither can I. Point being that you can never count on a particular light condition at a show.

Memorize the function and workflow of you instruments in near dark conditions where you can't read labels. This will prepare you for anything.

It's also a good idea to test you rig in bright sunlight. Better to find out you can't see anything at rehearsal than at a gig. Then come up with work arounds to remedy the situation.

Back in the day I gigged with an Ensoniq ESQ-1. I remember I was going to perform at an outdoor show. I couldn't see anything when I tested in bright sunlight. I built a little sun shield out of cardboard and black electrical tape.
