Presenting Tonight (5/18/20) on Launchpad Pro MK3 + Trip Down Memory Lane with Launchpad

Presenting on Launchpad Pro MK3

I’ll be doing an online talk tonight (5/18/20) at 7:30 PM MDT on the Launchpad Pro MK3.

Subs Up & BAUG present: Using the Launchpad Pro MK3 w/ Ableton Live and Hardware at https://www.meetup.com/SubsUp/events/270647931/

Meet the Launchpad Pro MK3

The Launhpad Pro MK3 is an incredible deep and useful controller that goes way beyond being an Ableton Live controller. It can be used as a stand-alone MIDI Controller to send notes and chords. It also has a 4 track stand-alone sequencer with advanced features such as probability and mutation. You can have 8 custom modes where you basically make 8 different custom MIDI Controllers.

Live integration also much improved with new dedicated buttons. You can also combine stand-alone with Live using features like “Print to Clip”. Additionally you can send MIDI out 2 hardware output and USB simultaneously. The pads are full RGB, velocity and pressure sensitive. They feel great. Plus this thing is light and small.

What I’ll Be Talking About

I’m still refining my talk but here is a mind map outline of what I’m planning to cover.

Click image to see larger version

Launchpad Pro MK3 In Action

I just love this thing and I’m finding all sorts of uses for it. The video below is an example of using it stand-alone. I used the stand-alone sequencer to make this pattern and recorded into the Digitone. I then use the notes and chord mode to play the Digitone live.

While the video below is the sibling Launchpad X it illustrates the use of the velocity sensitive faders in a custom mode to control an effects processor.

I’m also using custom modes to control my visual software Resolume. More on this in a future post.

10 Years with Launchpad

In a related note this year marks my 10th year using Novation Launchpads. Here are a few pics

Through the years I think I’ve owned 4 different versions (all the ones in green below). When I bought the Launchpad Pro MK3 some accused me of needing some sort of intervention (Dino and Jeff) 😂.

A Few Videos of the LP PRO MK3 in Use

Here are some videos from my archives using previous generation Launchpads. First a video from 2010.

Here is a video from 2013 where I’m using a launchpad to move patch cables on a virtual synth.

Closing Thoughts

In closing I’ll say that the Launchpad series have been transformative and fun and I look forward to working more with the Launchpad Pro MK3.

More Rehearsal’s Fund Raising Objectives

process-reversal

During its first fundraising cycle, Process Reversal (PR) aims to develop the resources needed to achieve four major goals. These objectives are integral to PR’s mission to preserve, promote and harness the expressive potential of photochemical image making.

Education –

Process Reversal’s education initiatives have two major tracks

  1. Photochemical Image-Making – Process Reversal is committed to facilitating and demystifying technical processes of these practices. This is and will continue to be achieved primarily through extensive workshop programming. In concert with these workshop sessions, PR develops innovative new tools designed for small-scale production. These devices are used in workshop environments to advance a new technological paradigm in image making that is well suited to this post-industrial age. These activities serve a primary aim of our mission: to promote the continued use of photochemical processes by filmmakers, artists, hobbyists, and the public at large by providing the training, the exposure, and the opportunity required.
  2. Media Literacy – In an increasingly image-driven era, Process Reversal is committed to promoting media literacy in all age groups. To be literate is to be able to read and write, so it follows that media literacy includes the ability to make as well as to interpret. Photochemical processes are the antecedents to contemporary image making, and to be exposed to these techniques is also to better understand other technologies, including digital tools. Rather than offer image making experiences that are defined by the content needs of media industries, Process Reversal provides a critical and historical context that fosters agency and understanding across the entire gamut of image making. To this end, PR seeks to launch a K-adult outreach program dedicated to filling the photochemical media literacy gap. Continue reading and donate here

Marooned Cover - Mark Mosher

I’ll be performing a brand new piece called “Marooned”. It is a 25 minute long-form improv piece in 7 movements. This music will be in the same universe as my three albums Reboot, I Hear Your Signals, and Fear Cannot Save Us.

It’s the soundtrack for an imaginary film about an earth ship on a mission to investigate an alien outpost on a massive moon. The ship crashes on approach and the only hope for the crew’s survival is making it across a harsh landscape to the alien outpost.

DSC09505

Rather than use my normal elaborate controllerism show rig with interactive visuals, this piece will be special in that it will be performed on a stripped down more intimate rig. I’ll be using only one hardware synthesizer (Nord Lead 4) using signature sounds,  one hardware sampler (Electron Octatrack) with field recordings with no sequenced elements prepared ahead of time, and a Tenori-On grid.

I will also be be doing a short collaboration with another artist in this lineup, Dino J.A Deanne.

I hope to see you at the show,

Mark Mosher

Mark Mosher - Denver Synth 01b - photo by synthtopia

I attended and performed at the Denver Synth Meet on March 14th. It was a great event with many attendees coming in from out of town.

Here are some photos of the general event as an album on Flickr.

https://www.flickr.com/apps/slideshow/show.swf?v=1811922554

After 5pm, musical performances began which included the following lineup.

110

I performed my full controllerism set performing songs off of my three alien invasion cinematic electronica albums Reboot, I Hear Your Signals, and Fear Cannot Save Us.

Synthtopia was in the house and got some fantastic photos of my set. I performed using Ableton Live with tons of virtual instruments I played using Ableton Push, keys (Nord Lead 4), Tenori-On, and Percussa Audio Cubes. on the center screen were my visuals which are created on the fly with live camera input and real-time FX (Live acts as my controller hub for this).  I was honored that vent founder Chris Blarsky run a second set of visuals on the outside screens during my set.

Here is a flickr album of my set.

I’m super excited to be performing at this event. First off, it will be great to bring our Musique concrète show to the Lamont School of music. Second, my daughter will be sitting in on one of my songs providing vocal drones. Third, , the venue is simply stunning.

Show Concept

“I can feel, as if it were quivering in my memory, the whole drama of these last three years of experimentation […] The miracle of concrete music is […] things begin to speak by themselves, as if they were bringing a message from a world unknown to us and outside us.”

– Pierre Schaeffer, “In Search of a Concrete Music”

The Lamont School of Music is hosting five artists presenting acoustic, analog electronic and digital noises, sound effects and tonal music inspired by the musique concréte form and philosophy. The artists will play in multiple configurations as solos, duos, and other combinations. Mark Mosher will create expressive sample-based “instruments” on-the-fly, building up his instruments in real-time by sampling his own synthesizers as well as capturing audio from contact mics, and output from the other artists. To compliment the music and sound, Mark will also project interactive visuals, and the visuals created by the other artists. Theremin artist Victoria Lundy, and sound designer and musician Rick Reid—all performing solo and interactive work, will join him. Lizzy Mosher will provide vocal drones, and Thomas Lundy will perform dry ice on metal “Copper Heart,” the Carbon Dioxide Orchestra’s signature instrument.

Program

  • Welcome
  • Copper Heart Trio Improv, – Victoria Lundy, theremin; Thomas Lundy, copper heart with dry ice;  Mark Mosher, Octatrack live sampling synthesis + visuals
  • Sounds from a Distant Outpost – Mark Mosher from album Fear Cannot Save UsMark Mosher, Ableton Llve/sampler performed on Ableton Push + visuals; Lizzy Mosher, vocal
  • After Hours (Part 2) Rick Reid – Rick Reid, field recordings, iPad.  This composition is offered as a sequel to John Pfeiffer’s “After Hours,” a track on his 1968 RCA album, Electronomusic: 9 Images. Pfeiffer used field recordings of office machines of that era (typewriters, rotary dial telephones, etc.) to create a percussion orchestra. “After Hours (Part 2)” updates that concept with sounds from the 21st century workplace.
  • Concrete Birds Victoria Lundy –Victoria Lundy, theremin, Ableton Live with samples
  • Wind and Ghosts Victoria Lundy – Victoria Lundy, theremin, Ableton Live with samples
  • “Tools of the Trade” Improv – Rick Reid, tools; Thomas Lundy, tools; Mark Mosher, Octatrack live sampling synthesis
  • Birth Mark Mosher & Michael O’Bannon, from A.I. Winter EP InstantiateMark Mosher, Octatrack with original harmonic content; Lizzy Mosher, voice over recording at age 5
  • End Jam  –  Victoria Lundy, theremin; Thomas Lundy, copper heart with dry ice; Rick Reid, live spoken word; Mark Mosher, Octatrack live sampling synthesis + visuals

Rick Reid has been fascinated with recorded sound ever since early childhood, when he heard his own voice played back on his older brother’s reel-to-reel tape deck. His first electronic instrument was a photo theremin, built with a Radio Shack electronics kit. Rick now owns and plays a wide range of electronic and acoustic instruments ranging from the conventional to the truly peculiar. Rick studied radio and TV broadcasting in both high school and college and worked part-time as a radio personality while still in school. He has since created thousands of TV on-air promos, marketing videos and commercials as a writer/producer for Starz, Encore, MoviePlex, TNN and broadcast TV stations in Salt Lake City and Las Vegas. As a freelance voice actor, he has also been heard on dozens of national and regional radio and TV commercials, web videos and corporate/industrial media productions. Rick has been a sound designer for more than sixty theater production in the Denver-Boulder area, and has occasionally performed as a stage actor. He has released two experimental electronic music albums and created underscore and theme music for the sci-fi web video series “Lucha Libre: El Tecolote vs. the Body Thief from Dimension X.” He is slated to play theremin on the score of an upcoming indie horror feature film. Rick makes his home in Denver with his pet tarantula, Curly. For more details about Rick’s creative work and links to his music, visit www.RickReid.com.
