Spending More Time on My Music Laptop & Dusting Off Some Original Presets for Synths like U-HE Zebra 2

I find I’ve been spending more time making music and sound with my laptop while in isolation than with hardware. Of course I’m still making music and sound with my Elektron boxes, but I’m just noticing the laptop is getting more use in my day-to-day.

Perhaps it’s because I can just take it anywhere in the house and wherever I end up sitting becomes my creative space. While in the past I might have used my iPad for this sort of thing, I find I’m on my iPad more for reading books, blogs, news and connecting with people so the laptop seems like a break. Topsy-turvy times for sure but a good reminder of the the amazing sonic arsenal of tools that sits within most of our laptops.

As you’ve probably seen in recent posts I’ve been spending a lot of time with Ableton Live and Push 2 along with all of Live’s devices and instruments. Over the years though, I’ve created 100s of presets for some amazing virtual instruments.

So I’ve started a new project to dust off some original presets for Live and other commercial synths and get all the sounds out of the archives and back in play on my laptop.

I just restored my collection of original Zebra presets. Here is a short video from my Instagram of a sound that is quite Krell-like. I’m just holding a single key 😀.

Video Original Ableton Wavetable Preset “Numbers” on Push 2

A quick post to share a video of a new original preset that’s in progress on the most amazing @Ableton #Wavetable#synth. This one is inspired by Kraftwerk and it called “Numbers” 😀. #SaturdayNightSoundDesign.

This was made entirely with Push 2 without using a mouse. As I’m using Push I incorporate the touch strip, velocity and pressure into this sound.

In a related note I’m slowly working my way towards a whole pack of Wavetable presets so subscribe to be notified of my progress along with other Modulate This! posts.

Ableton “Spectral Textures” Live Pack is Now Free

Ableton released a new Live Pack called Spectral Textures.

The Spectral Textures Pack is now free. New sounds can bring new ideas, so we’ll be offering more free sounds soon.

https://www.ableton.com/en/blog/ideas-offers-making-music-home/

You can download the pack here https://www.ableton.com/en/packs/spectral-textures.

One part field recordings and one part additive synthesis, Spectral Textures is a unique instrument that blends together two distinct worlds of sound to create vibrant atmospheres, textures and progressions…

The majority of Spectral Textures’ presets consist of two sound elements – spectral samples created with a digital additive synthesizer and field recordings – in combination with effects…

Sourced from an abandoned garden center in eastern Germany, an assortment of unique field recordings infuse many of Spectral Textures with a vibrant, real-world timbres. The site’s dilapidated greenhouse and a variety of scattered metal, wood and glass objects found there provided some truly fascinating sound sources…

Improv with Ableton Live, Push 2 and Max for Live Devices FlexGroove and Granulator II

Here is video of an improv with Ableton Live and Push2 I streamed to Facebook Live earlier today. The video is a download from my FB live stream so low rez but you’ll get the idea.

I improvised it all on-the-fly. Prior to playing I setup a few tracks such as a Simpler containing a sample from a cylinder phonograph, a track with Max for Live Granulator II along with some drum racks. Ableton was kind enough to give me a copy of M4L device called FlexGroove.

FlexGroove

I’m just wrapping my head around it and in this piece I’m using it on the piano part of the piece to pull notes off the grid. I start using it at around the 3m50s mark. I’m really looking forward into digging deeper into this device.

FlexGroove is a Max for Live device for off-the-grid MIDI sequencing. Give parts an expressive push and pull, fluidly transition from one time signature to another, or play with unconventional swing patterns.

In a related note I’ve been experimenting with OBS Studio on Windows 10 with Ableton Live and will share some tips on configuration soon. Subscribe to get notified of this and other posts via email.

New Microsoft Surface Announcements Including Surface Laptop, Pro, Neo, and Duo + My Journey with Surface for Music Production and Performance So Far

My Journey So Far with Surface

I’m a big fan of design of Microsoft Surface computers and have a Surface Laptop and Surface Pro 4 that I use for every day computing and for music applications like Ableton Live and virtual synthesizers. I literally have trouble using computers that don’t support touch displays and pen – haha.

Using a Surface Pro 4 and Pen to Manipulate Ableton Wavetable

Here are just a few videos where I took advantage of the pen in synthesis.

I also use my Surface Laptop for my live Ableton Performances like this one.

Of course while the devices are super light and the designs are quite fantastic as a live musician we can always use more oomph and connectivity. So I was excited to hear that Microsoft held an event today announcing the new Microsoft Surface line updates plus a look into products they will be releasing all the way out to the holiday season of 2020.

Official Product Videos

There are some great new updates coming to the line. Here are the official product videos.

Surface Laptop 3

Yah, removable hard drive!

Make a more powerful statement with new Surface Laptop 3. Sleek and light, it travels with ease and delivers improved speed and performance, all-day battery life, and outstanding graphics. Now in two sizes and two elegant keyboard finishes. Fuel your ideas with Surface Laptop 3.

Product Page is here.

Surface Pro 7

At the office, at home or en route, new Surface Pro 7 adapts to the way you work with laptop-to-tablet versatility. And now, it delivers more power than ever, with a laptop-class Intel® Core™ processor, all-day battery, and improved graphics — plus more multitasking connections, including both USB-C™ and USB-A ports. More power from the Pro you know. Surface Pro 7.

Product page is here.

Surface Pro X

I didn’t find a product teaser for this but they cover it in the presentation summary below. Here is the product page https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/p/surfacehttps://www.microsoft.com/en-us/p/surface-pro-x/8vdnrp2m6hhc-pro-x.

Featuring blazing-fast LTE connectivity,3 our thinnest Surface stands out with industry-leading performance and a stunning, virtually edge-to-edge 13” touchscreen. The Pen stores securely and recharges in the luxurious, Alcantara® covered keyboard, complete with backlit keys and large multi-touch glass trackpad.

New – Surface Neo

Ok, now for some very new designs starting with the Surface Neo. I see some incredible potential for electronic and multimedia creation and performance.

Coming Holiday 2020. A groundbreaking new dual-screen device that redefines how you get things done. With two 9” screens, a revolutionary 360° hinge, touch, pen, keyboard, and incredible new Windows experiences, Surface Neo enables you to do more, anywhere.

Recommended Video – “What Is MaxForLive… And Why Aren’t You Using It Yet!?” by ELPHNT

Max for Live is an incredibly helpful solution that allows you to further customize and extend Ableton Live. While you can use it as a development tool, many people I’ve bumped into don’t realize it’s also extremely useful to artists who don’t develop.

For example, I’ve been using it for years now to use Ableton Live itself more like a modular and to extend Live through both free and commercial Max for Live devices from Ableton and third parties.

As Max for Live is a bit misunderstood so I wanted to spread the word about a video I discovered via Darwin’s Grosse’s “All Things Modular” Blog, It’s ELPHNT‘s YouTube channel and the videos covers about all sorts of use cases for non-developers.

It’s called called “What Is MaxForLive… And Why Aren’t You Using It Yet!?” and offers a great overview in just under 8 minutes. In the video he touches on:

  • What is Max for Live
  • How should use it
  • How to set it up

A Few Ways I’ve Used Max for Live with Free Devices

Tow Max for Live Devices – Granulator II device and a device that lets me map my wireless Xbox 360 Controller
Max for Live Granulator II and Convolution Reverb devices along with native devices.
This one requires a more knowledge but I wanted to include it as it illustrates how you can bring Max patches into Max for Live devices. This is my first try at it.
