Using Green Oak Crystal Synthesizer with Percussa AudioCubes

DSCN3560

Experiments with Green Oak’s desktop version of Crystal continue. It’s been a while since I’ve used this synth as I’ve been focusing most of my energy on using commercial synths. It’s a pretty amazing synth and competes feature wise against many commercial synths.

Here is a cool feature. The MIDI Modulate matrix supports direct mapping of MIDI CC’s. This means you can map controllers directly without having to do it through your DAW. Click the image below to see a close-up of the screen shot which illustrates how I’ve used Percussa’s free MIDI Bridge app to configure AudioCubes to send CCs, and then I configure Crystal to listen for spatial control from cube faces.audiocubs_crystal

(Modulate This) iOS iPhone/iPod/iTunes Synth: Crystal

Experimenting with Patch Sharing with Crystal VST Desktop and iPhone/IPad

clip_image002

I was quite excited to see that Crystal XT was released for iPhone/iPad, mainly because the mobile version shares synth architecture allowing you to program patches on the desktop then move patches to the mobile edition. I think this is the sort of workflow that is going to make me use the iPhone more for music making.

This is just a quick post to let you now I’ve had success with this this. There on instructions on this at the bottom of this page – http://www.greenoak.com/crystal/. It took me a while get this all worked out as I was not that familiar with Crystal’s patch management system when using it within Live.

I’ve got it all worked out now and will do a follow up post with more step-by-step details soon.

Green Oak Crystal VST – Free Semi-Modular Synthesizer for PC and Mac

image

I’ve been doing some research to find new synths to increase my palette of sounds. Along the way I "re-discovered" Crystal which is a very cool Semi-Modular synthesizer. It reminds me a little of Zebra 2 and Absynth 4 but – it’s free! Pretty amazing considering the feature set – "…semi-modular software synthesizer featuring both subtractive syn  and frequency modulation (FM) synthesis. It offers abundant modulation control with over 90 parameters which may be modulated, multi-stage envelopes with graphical editors, extensive tempo sync of envelopes/lforates/delay times, built-in effects for chorus/flanging/comb filtering/echoes, and a band splitter for effects processing by frequency band. Not only that, Crystal has wave sequencing, granular synthesis, program morphing, MIDI learn, and imports soundfonts. The musical applications for Crystal are literally boundless."

Installation is manual but straightforward. Simply follow the instructions on the download page. Don’t forget to grab the additional waveforms and patches.

As I mentioned this synth is free and the developer, Glen Olander, says creating Crystal is a "labor of love, so I don’t accept payments from Crystal users." He does accept donations on behalf a senior center though so if you want to donate go to the bottom of the about page.
