Sonar 8: Pre-Orders Start Sept. 22, 2008 + $99 Deal on Dimension Pro or Rapture

image

I just popped over to www.cakewalk.com and saw a few items of note.

First, Cakewalk will be taking pre-orders Sonar on September 22nd. I couldn’t find any information on their site about what is going to be in version 8 – just the banner you see above. Revised: Cakewalk has now officially announced. You can see a list of new features on their web site here.

I composed and produced a lot of commercial music between 2002-2006 using Sonar including my song "Flight" which appears as an extra feature on the DVD and on the soundtrack for the film "One Six Right". In 2006 I switched to Ableton Live as my primary DAW because the non-linear workflow of Live suits how I compose electronica music. I still keep Sonar on my system and do use it and recommend it for those who are looking for a more linear virtual recording studio. It’s top notch, especially it’s deep midi editing capabilities, fantastic slip editing and automatic cross-fade features.

Second, I saw a press release  on their site documenting a deal on Dimension Pro and Rapture. I’ve had Dimension Pro for years and as Rompers go I’ve been pretty happy with it. Here is an excerpt:

"Owners of Apple’s Logic Pro and Garageband, MOTU Digital Performer, Steinberg’s Cubase and Nuendo, Digidesign Pro Tools LE/HD, Ableton Live, Image Line’s Fruity Loops, and Magix Samplitude Pro can purcahse Dimension Pro or Rapture for only $99 at select retailers through October 31st."

Cakewalk Ships Sonar 7 – Links to use While Their Website is in Flux

Sonar7

Article update: Looks like Cakewalk now has their site in order. Of course the product info and links in this post still apply.

Cakewalk has released Sonar 7 although their web site seems to be in flux regarding this version and they didn’t even get a press release out before posting the kit (perhaps they are trying to get it out there quickly with the announcement of Logic 8). Therefore, I dug up some links for you Sonar users out there so you can figure out what’s new, as well as purchase. Note, they usual upgrade deals exist.

The front of their website still shows 6 as current, but if you click through to the product page Sonar 7.

According to the product page, here is what’s new.

  • A complete MIDI overhaul with Smart MIDI Tools and dozens of other new features
  • Introduction of the most powerful Step Sequencer found in any DAW
  • True linear phase mastering plug-ins
  • Internal sidechaining
  • Delay compensation for external hardware
  • Pitch to MIDI functionality with Roland V-Vocal 1.5
  • Numerous workflow, mixing, and delivery enhancements throughout the application.

Here is a link to a flash promo – http://www.cakewalk.com/products/sonar/Sonar_7_Features.swf.

The product page doesn’t have an order link, but you can order by clicking purchase, or using this link – http://store.cakewalk.com/b2cus/category.aspx?categoryID=9.

Detail specs are not yet on the product page, but I found a list in the cakewalk forums here – http://forum.cakewalk.com/tm.asp?m=1158394.

LA Ballet Opens Inaugural Season with Combo of Live & Virtual Players

Nutcracker

I just got a newsletter from Cakewalk  with a link to an interesting story from Broadcast Room.com about the use of a virtual orchestra in Los Angeles Ballet’s latest production.

"The Los Angeles Ballet launched its inaugural season at the Beverly
Hills Wilshire Theatre with an original production of ‘The
Nutcracker
.’  In a landmark first, 22 live musicians were augmented by
33 virtual players to round out the 55 musicians called for by the
Tchaikovsky score."

Ends up they only had room in the orchestra pit for 22 players yet wanted to play the full score – so they augmented real players with virtual players using Garritan Personal Orchestra (Learn more | Buy
).The software instrument was hosted out of Sonar 6 Producers Edition  (Learn More | Buy
). Gary Garritan even helped with the production.

The story also indicates that the "Musician’s Union Approves Landmark Use of Garritan Personal Orchestra" :^).
