DEVO: Origins – SXSW Music 2009

DEVO-sxsw

I missed this video back in 2009. Some funs stories on the origin of DEVO, their first trip to Los Angeles for a music showcase, and how a monster movie host influenced their work.

Watch the video.

Where did DEVO come from? How did they become ‘lightning rods for hostility?’ When did Bowie and Eno enter the picture? These questions and more are addressed in this video clip from the SXSW Interview with Nic Harcourt. Tales of their early years in Ohio and California provide a primer in the theory and practice of devolution.

RIP Robert “Bob 2” Casale

Bob_2-revised-lores

Very sad news from Club Devo

“As an original member of Devo, Bob Casale was there in the trenches with me from the beginning.
He was my level-headed brother, a solid performer and talented audio engineer, always giving more than he got.  He was excited about the possibility of Mark Mothersbaugh allowing Devo to play shows again. His sudden death from conditions that lead to heart failure came as a total shock to us all.”

-Gerald Casale, Devo founder

and Mutato Musika.

“We are shocked and saddened by Bob Casale’s passing.  He not only was integral in DEVO’s sound, he worked over twenty years at Mutato, collaborating with me on sixty or seventy films and television shows, not to mention countless commercials and many video games.  Bob was instrumental in creating the sound of projects as varied as Rugrats and Wes Anderson’s films. He was a great friend. I will miss him greatly. “

-Mark Mothersbaugh

Devo has been my favorite band since I heard the first note of there music. They influenced me in so many ways. It’s a sad day and my sincere condolences to Bob’s family and other members of Devo.

I had the good fortune of seeing Devo on multiple occasions, the last time being at the Warfield in San Francisco in March of 2011.  I found a clip on YouTube from that show. It’s a video with of Bob 2  front and center playing the great opening lead guitar riff on "Freedom of Choice" (at 1:08) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-EnrZUj9iPQ.

RIP Robert "Bob 2" Casale.

DEVO Tour Postponed, Get Well Bob 1, Mark Mothersbaugh and Gerald Casale Will Still Attend Moogfest

Just saw on DEVO’s blog that DEVO has had to postpone the tour due to the fact that Bob Mothersbuagh is injured. From their site:

imageDEVO deeply regret that they have had to postpone all of their upcoming live dates for 2010 due to a serious hand injury sustained by guitarist Bob Mothersbaugh. A glass shard sliced Mothersbaugh's right thumb to the bone, severing a tendon. He underwent immediate emergency surgery and is expected to make a full recovery after proper care and therapy. Most of DEVO's upcoming November tour dates, including Solana Beach's Belly Up, , Los Angeles' Club Nokia, and San Francisco's Warfield Theater, will be rescheduled for next spring and the public will be informed once new dates have been confirmed. Mark Mothersbaugh and Gerald Casale will still attend Moogfest on October 29th, in Asheville, NC. As previously announced, DEVO have been awarded the first-ever Moog Innovation Award by Moog Music.

DEVO VIDEO – Industry Insight and Awesome Behind-The-Scenes Tour

image

Shockhound.com just posted two awesome video interviews with DEVO. I’m sharing yet another DEVO related post because I think even if your not a DEVO fan you’ll find their perspective on music and the music industry of interest. In the first video, Jerry also relates a first person account of the Kent State massacre. The second video offers a tour of their studio including a discussion of some of the circuit bent toys used on their new album.

If you are a DEVO fan, you’ll really dig these two videos as you’ll get to see Mark and Jerry portrayed in a more conversational light than many of the DEVO “propaganda” vids (don't get me wrong, I love DEVO propaganda).

DEVO’s New Album “Something For Everybody” Has Relased Along with a new Reality Video Series

image

Hi Spuds,

DEVO’s first album in 20 years “Something for Everybody” dropped today. I just bought the deluxe edition :^). Checkout the live listening party for 20 cats http://www.ustream.tv/devo?loc=interstitialskip

One of my favorite things about DEVO is how they blend social commentary into their art – and of course their heave use of synths! I’ve really been enjoying their current angle which is commentary on consumerism, big corporations, and mega marketing. I think it’s awesome that they went back to Warner Bros. for this release and got them in on the satire.

Here is a brand new video and Episode 1 of of a 5 episode tongue-in-cheek we reality series they just kicked off today – DEVO Makes Something For Everybody – Episode 1. They’ll post new episodes on upcoming Tuesdays.

http://o.aolcdn.com/videoplayer/AOL_PlayerLoader.swf

They’ll also be appearing on the Colbert Report on June 16th.

Lastly, DEVO is starting a big tour to spread the word about devolution.

Devo Gearing up for 2010 – Playing Awards Ceremonies at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Whistler, BC February 22nd…

2009 was a pretty big year for DEVO. They re-issued of 'Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo!' and  'Freedom Of Choice' and went out on tour to perform both albums in their entirety.

2010 looks to be even bigger. They are wrapping up work on a new album, have a deal with Warner, are poised for a tour in 2010 with Josh Freese (NIN) on drums, will be performing with a “rumored” new look, and have kicked off some fun de-evolution and social commentary.

Upcoming shows include:

On Warner Brothers and Corporate Marketing
Is DEVO holding back on their rhetoric now that they are back with Warner Brothers? Thankfully no as evidenced by the blog post by bassist Gerald Casale:

“Spudboys and Spudgirls, what goes around comes around! 30 years of De-evolution finds Devo back together with the label that unleashed them upon the land – Warner Brothers Records! Why now, why WB? Because the hour is getting late. It's now or never and you know it's true. De-evolution is real! It's time for Devo to reclaim their territory now that the world has turned and vindicated their original vision. What better way to celebrate than with the devil you know? As Booji Boy said "We're All Devo"!”

They also are posting some new tongue-in-cheek “Devo Inc.” videos. Here is one on focus group testing.

View embedded video:

DEVO definitely have not lost their sense of humor and it looks like the spud boys are coming back in a big way. I’m looking forward to their electronic music and social commentary mischief!

Synth Pioneers DEVO New Song “Watch Us Work It” in Dell Commercial

According to a recent Devo fan clup newsletter:

"DEVO wrote a new song called "Watch Us Work It" and recorded at Mutato Muzika in Los Angeles, CA, and produced by Sweden’s famous Teddy Bears. DELL heard it because Paul Malmstrom and Linus Karlsson at the Mother agency in NYC played it for them as a possibility for a song for their TV campaign featuring a newly developed, high-end laptop computer. DELL liked it, and now you can hear this brand new DEVO song when you watch the commercial currently running on nationwide TV.

The song is now available on iTunes! Download it here.
