:I HEAR YOUR SIGNALS” Announcement, Download Links, Fun Facts, Listening tips

Mark_Mosher_I-Hear-Your-Signals_Cover_400

After eight months of work, I'm  very excited to announce that my latest album I HEAR YOUR SIGNALS is now available as a digital download.

LISTEN/DOWNLOAD/BUY

  1. BandCamp – available “name your price”. To download for FREE click the “Buy Now” Button and enter $0. I recommend downloading the album from here as you'll get a 4-panel digital booklet containing original photos and art and liner notes.
  2. I iTunes

  3. Amazon MP3
  4. ReverbNation

FUN FACTS

  1. The album contains 8 original songs composed and produced completely in the digital realm using state-of-the-art virtual synthesizers. Even the Theremin analog signal was converted back to digital so it could be used to drive virtual instruments.
  2. The album was composed and produced entirely on a laptop using Ableton Live 8 running Windows 7.
  3. The album was composed an arranged for live performance and was created using keyboards, matrix controllers, the exotic Theremin, and unique visual and tangible controllers such as the Tenori-On and Percussa AudioCubes. So, while I HEAR YOUR SIGNALS is a “studio album”, I rehearsed and could perform all the songs live prior to recording. For many songs, I recorded lead synth elements live in one pass (after rehearsing for many weeks). This gives the album a more live/ “jam-like” feel than my previous album. It also makes these songs great for live performance.
  4. A few songs like “Control Zone” are quite experimental and the notes and modulation of synth parameters was achieved with hand and finger movement in space and I never touched a physical key or button during recording.
  5. Some songs on the album are a retelling of some of the songs on REBOOT, but from a very different point of view. For example, “When Connected” is the same “story” as  REBOOT’s “Infected” but as viewed from the opposite point of view.
  6. While the songs are copyrighted, I’m making them available under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 3.0 License so you podcasters, bloggers, and hobbyists can safely use the music in your productions as long as you offer an attribution. Drop me an email if you use a track so I can check out your work.
  7. The images in the digital booklet/liner notes are all original and based on photographs taken by me and my children. I did the graphic design work.

LISTENING TIPS

  1. Both the REBOOT and I HEAR YOUR SIGNALS are albums in the sense that the songs played in sequence tell a story. If you can spare the time, spin them the albums at least once in one sitting.
  2. If you don’t have time to listen to the whole album try and eke out 5 minutes and listen to each track without skipping. These are instrumental compositions and not dance floor tracks so they have a beginning, middle and end:^).
  3. A lot of work went into the mix and there are dynamics, sounds, positioning of sounds you’ll miss on computer speakers. So listen with with some nice headphones or on a nice system with a sub-woofer.

I hope you’ve found this information more entertaining and fun than a stuffy old press release.  Drop me an email or leave comments on this post and let me know which songs you like best!

Thanks again for your support and please tell your friends about I HEAR YOUR SIGNALS.

DEVO VIDEO – Industry Insight and Awesome Behind-The-Scenes Tour

image

Shockhound.com just posted two awesome video interviews with DEVO. I’m sharing yet another DEVO related post because I think even if your not a DEVO fan you’ll find their perspective on music and the music industry of interest. In the first video, Jerry also relates a first person account of the Kent State massacre. The second video offers a tour of their studio including a discussion of some of the circuit bent toys used on their new album.

If you are a DEVO fan, you’ll really dig these two videos as you’ll get to see Mark and Jerry portrayed in a more conversational light than many of the DEVO “propaganda” vids (don't get me wrong, I love DEVO propaganda).

DEVO’s New Album “Something For Everybody” Has Relased Along with a new Reality Video Series

image

Hi Spuds,

DEVO’s first album in 20 years “Something for Everybody” dropped today. I just bought the deluxe edition :^). Checkout the live listening party for 20 cats http://www.ustream.tv/devo?loc=interstitialskip

One of my favorite things about DEVO is how they blend social commentary into their art – and of course their heave use of synths! I’ve really been enjoying their current angle which is commentary on consumerism, big corporations, and mega marketing. I think it’s awesome that they went back to Warner Bros. for this release and got them in on the satire.

Here is a brand new video and Episode 1 of of a 5 episode tongue-in-cheek we reality series they just kicked off today – DEVO Makes Something For Everybody – Episode 1. They’ll post new episodes on upcoming Tuesdays.

http://o.aolcdn.com/videoplayer/AOL_PlayerLoader.swf

They’ll also be appearing on the Colbert Report on June 16th.

Lastly, DEVO is starting a big tour to spread the word about devolution.

Devo Gearing up for 2010 – Playing Awards Ceremonies at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Whistler, BC February 22nd…

2009 was a pretty big year for DEVO. They re-issued of 'Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo!' and  'Freedom Of Choice' and went out on tour to perform both albums in their entirety.

2010 looks to be even bigger. They are wrapping up work on a new album, have a deal with Warner, are poised for a tour in 2010 with Josh Freese (NIN) on drums, will be performing with a “rumored” new look, and have kicked off some fun de-evolution and social commentary.

Upcoming shows include:

On Warner Brothers and Corporate Marketing
Is DEVO holding back on their rhetoric now that they are back with Warner Brothers? Thankfully no as evidenced by the blog post by bassist Gerald Casale:

“Spudboys and Spudgirls, what goes around comes around! 30 years of De-evolution finds Devo back together with the label that unleashed them upon the land – Warner Brothers Records! Why now, why WB? Because the hour is getting late. It's now or never and you know it's true. De-evolution is real! It's time for Devo to reclaim their territory now that the world has turned and vindicated their original vision. What better way to celebrate than with the devil you know? As Booji Boy said "We're All Devo"!”

They also are posting some new tongue-in-cheek “Devo Inc.” videos. Here is one on focus group testing.

View embedded video:

DEVO definitely have not lost their sense of humor and it looks like the spud boys are coming back in a big way. I’m looking forward to their electronic music and social commentary mischief!

Notes on The Music of Caprica & Battlestar Galactica From Composer Bear McCreary’s Blog

image

Lots going on this month in the Battlestar Galactica universe. Battlestar Galactica:The Plan is airing tonight where you’ll get to “See the war for humanities survival from the other Side”. According to the Wikipedia page, “It consists of newly filmed material as well as a compilation of footage from the TV series and miniseries.” The IMDB listing credits Edward James Almos as the director. The new series Caprica premiers on January 22nd.

image Bear McCreary returns as composer for both shows. If you enjoy his music and want to learn more about his work visit his web site and blog.

Battlestar Galactica:The Plan was original released on DVD earlier in 2009 and around the time of the DVD’s release Bear wrote a lengthy post discussing the music.

image

Spoiler Alert, click hear to read after you’ve seen the movie – http://www.bearmccreary.com/blog/?p=2834. I also found out via his blog that in addition to Battlestar, Bear has been involved with some of my favorite performers via the Johnny “Vatos” Tribute to Oingo Boingo. That connection continues with “The Plan” as the blog entry mentions that Oingo Boing bassist John Avila on the “Final Five Theme”.

Shows and music should be Frakin’ awesome.

New Photo Album and Notes On Social Media and “Home Turf Brand Equity”

image

I just started publishing pictures into a photo album off of one of my hosted accounts. There are some fun pics of me with gear and wearing swag in different locations.

I’ve posted some of these shots on various social media sites in the past and some shots are exclusive to this album.

Obviously, there are huge PR advantages to posting images and music on various social sites. However, don’t forget to re-post this information on your own web sites as well. Social sites come and go, so duplicating posts on your own sites means you won’t lose out if a site goes away. Also, posting on your own sites helps you build “home turf brand equity”.

By the way, I think I just coined a phrase :^).

Enjoy the pics. More to come…

Videos of Jordan Rudess and His Korg nanoKEY

Over the holidays I picked up a Korg nanoKey and nanoKONTROL. I was skeptical at first but I have to say that I use them all the time – especially when on the go or when making music with a laptop on the couch. The build quality is no where near what you’d see on an expensive controller, but well within reason for the $50ish price tag. I put them on my Best of 2008 list.

imageI mentioned using them on Twitter and got a few replies about the nano series which made me hunt for some videos of the controllers in use. I found this videos of Jordon Rudess of Dream Theater jamming out with a nanoKey MIDI controller. Enjoy.

Sonic State Behind the Scenes Video – Howard Jones, Robbie Bronnimann, and Laura Clapp On Tour in Australia

Howard_jones I found this series of vides via pedx1ng’s post on the Ableton Live forum, who found it on Matrixsynth. These videos by Sonic State cover Howard Jone's tour in Australia. I've re-blogged them here with annotation.

I've always liked Howard Jones's music and the fact that he's not all about nostalgia but is still writing and experimenting with technology in Live performance.

Also, my first exposure to Ableton Live was at a Howard Jones show back in the day of Ableton 3.0. Like now, he was using it to play scenes on the fly so he wasn’t locked into one arrangement for the whole song. After the show, I ran home and did some research and then bought Ableton Live 3.0 right away. Thanks Howard and Robbie and Ableton for changing the way I compose :^).

Video 1: In this first installment, Howard Jones has Robbie Bronnimmann leave a blizzard strewn UK and head for Australia and meet up with Laura Clapp in Adelaide Australia. He also talks about he now uses the Roland Fantom G8 to simplify his rig and work in a graphical way. He also discusses the polyphony and feel of the Fantom.
http://www.sonicstate.com/tv/flvplayer.swf

Video 2: In this video Howard Jones and Robbie Bronnimmann are in Perth Australia and explain the how they use Ableton Live, and bus powered devices (Motu audio interface, Novation Remote SL, Novation Nocturn) on their tour in Australia. Robbie describes who he uses Live to trigger sequences on-the-fly, do real-time FX processing on backing tracks and live vocals using built-in Ableton Live plugins.
http://www.sonicstate.com/tv/flvplayer.swf

Video 3: Howard Jones has Robbie Bronnimmann, Laura Clapp at sound check in Brisbane. A little taste of "Always Asking Questions". Laura discusses how shes uses TC-Helicon Voice Live and a Novation ReMote SL Compact to create harmonies and vocal effects on the fly. The also explains that he's his own warm-up band as he's doing a 30 minute acoustic set prior to the electronic trio taking the stage.
